I like The Following because I have watched it from the beginning. It is awful, predictable, and completely ridiculous, but after investing in it since the first episode, I can't help but watch each episode.
The same goes for Bates Motel.
I also like Sons of Anarchy, Boardwalk Empire, and Walking Dead, alrhough these are clearly more accepted.

Now that we've hit the second page I'll participate. I'll also say, I like the way this thread is turning out.
I liked the show Reaper while it was on (and still watch on DVD from time to time), because first off, it had an interesting premise. There was a lot of slapstick humor involved and the show didn't take itself too seriously. The main character was easy to root for and there was a really good and funny supporting cast. And since it was on the CW, the chicks were hot. And it also had my favorite TV character actor Ray Wise, playing the devil.

I love Frasier.
Frasier blends belly laughing comedy moments with subtle humor and reference style comedy better than anything else on TV, ever. Yes, you have to be somewhat intelligent to get every joke, but not just to laugh and have fun.
And this can be a plus or a minus to some people, but they never really got to dramatic in Frasier. In many sitcoms (especially in the 70's & 80's) there was always a serious or sad episode. Frasier never did this. It stayed light hearted throughout its run.
Also, the writers did a great job of not changing the characters or having them "grow" into different people than they were when they started.

Being able to cross over to being serious and character development are two of the best things about any sitcoms run IMO so thats a definite negative for me

quote:Character develpoment and growth is one thing. The writers changing them into something completely different an insufferable from the way they were originally is something else. Scrubs is the biggest offender in this category. BBT is not to far behind.
character development

ETA:
I'm the guy that re-watches all of the old episodes of COPS that they have shown on G4. It's playing on my TV as we speak. I like the show because it is people, not going by chinese58 on this board, getting arrested for doing all kinds of stupid stuff. It's fun because I don't have any warrants out, drugs in my possession, illegal firearms in my possession or hookers riding with me now when I drive. If I had any of these situations going on, I couldn't watch.
The pacing of the show is perfect for viewing while posting on one's favorite bulletin board and if it's a boring episode, there will be a different one coming on in thirty minutes. They show their commercials at different intervals than the guys on the Military Channel so I can flip back and forth and watch most of both COPS & TMC programing.

Any good entertainment medium has a good plot, multiple characters with depth and development, good writing, good cinematography, and an engaging narrative
Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, and Boardwalk Empire meet all of these criteria

My favorite TV show is South Park, because I started watching it when it first aired and I was in second grade at the time. I found it hilarious back then and I still do to this day. I remember covering my walls with South Park posters, and I would constantly sketch Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny. It’s as if those guys are my childhood friends and we have remained friends through all of these years. The shows has definitely aged since first airing, and I have aged with it. I am attached to Matt and Trey. I love their outlook on life and their views on controversial topics. Those guys can do no wrong through my eyes and they are my heroes.

i like arrested development because its like a giant inside joke that never stops
everytime you watch it you pick up another joke and another one
its layers of hilarity and every character is absolutely hilarious and delivers every line perfectly
and because Marta #1

Hannibal
Incredibly different IMO
Violent, very much so for network tv. Character is already known but this a different look IMO and done well so far. Top flight cast, just dark and a raw deep dark side of humanity, way I see it anyway
