Did you just say that the acting in LOTRs was better than Star Wars?!?!
Is this even debateable? Other than Alec Guiness, is there anyone remotely on the level of Ian McKellen's Gandolf? Keep in mind, there are a TON of charatcres and a large number of fine actors dispersed throughout LOTR.
And Star Wars? What are the outstanding actiing performaces there?
And let's not get into Lucas' shitty dialog... Half of what Luke says in A New Hope is cringe worthy.

It's like comparing dumb&dumber to titanic, imo.
Wow. You are stupid.
Geezus. I guess I should not have used this analogy.
The point is that comedy vs drama are two different genres. I don't mean to compare one of the LOTR/SW to either dumb and dumber or titanac
It is just my point that I think they are different genres.

One is a good vs evil sci-fi epic with action, drama, and tragedy.

They really are not all that different. Just different scenery.

See my post above about the difference between Fantasy and SciFi.

This is a good breakdown. You're right, they have very similar elements. My point is that for me, they're in different genres and I don't think one can say one is BETTER than the other one.

I'm thinking they are more different than you might think.
Ex. Look at some of the opinions on this movie debate. Some are fantasy fans and some are sci-fi fans. They love one or hate the other.
eta: fix.

imho LOTR>>>>>>SW
the only thing I dont like about the LOTR trilogy is that they left out Tom Bombadil, who I think is probably the greatest character in literary history

I agree totally. I kept waiting to see something about him.
Maybe if hobbit ever comes out, they'll have him.
I DID like in the extended version of LOTR how they showed the cement trolls!

Tom Bombadil wasn't in The Hobbit, so I doubt he will be in the movie version.

Um. Yes he was.
The trolls in extended LOTR were also from the hobbit.

No. He definitely was not. I've read The Hobbit twice and Tom Bombadil wasn't in there either time.

That is right though

Star Wars wins because of its characters. I break it down like this:
Frodo vs. Luke Skywalker - Both are whiny little terds for the most part, and both have a glowing sword of some sort. Although Luke does kiss his sister, at least we know he likes girls. Meanwhile, we have to suffer through 8 hours of Frodo undressing Sam with his eyes. Luke wins.
Han Solo vs. Aragorn - This one is much closer. Solo and Aragorn are both certified badasses, but Solo wins by an edge because he survives being frozen in metal and kills the baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy while blind. That and he hangs out with Chewbecca, who could rip Gimli's arms off and beat Legolas to death with them. Solo wins. Although Aragorn gets a bonus point for keeping his beard at exactly 6 days length for all 3 movies, how does he do that?
Sauron vs. Darth Vader - Vader wins because he actually has lines other than "I see you."
R2-D2 and C-3PO vs. Merry and Pippen - Seriously, is this the shire or Disneyland? Merry and Pippen? Why not just name them Bi and Curious. Robots win.
Leia vs. Arwen - Despite the fact that Liv Tyler is hot as hell, she does not, however, wear a metal bikini at anytime during the series. Leia wins.
Finally, the battle of the deadmeats.
TK-421 vs. Boromir - Both these characters were doomed from the beginning, but I'll give the edge to Boromir, because at least he goes out like a man. So there, LOTR gets this one. Boromir wins.
Frodo vs. Luke Skywalker - Both are whiny little terds for the most part, and both have a glowing sword of some sort. Although Luke does kiss his sister, at least we know he likes girls. Meanwhile, we have to suffer through 8 hours of Frodo undressing Sam with his eyes. Luke wins.

Wasn't that just some random stormtooper? How does that relate to Boromir?
Also, how do you not compare Obi-Wan to Gandalf?

Because he knows that Gandalf wins in a landslide.

Obi-Wan has a lightsaber, Gandalf only has a staff. Lightsaber looks much cooler when you swing it on someone. I'll give Gandalf that he has the better hat.
