Both series are awesome.

I still think comparing these two is like apples and oranges.
I find LOTR to be in a fantasy genre and SW to be in a sci-fi genre.

It's like comparing dumb&dumber to titanic, imo.

You may not like one or the other or both, but I don't think that they should be put into the same comparison ..

I understand what you are saying. Just think it's a bit of a stretch. A stretch to the extreme to say one of the movies is equatable to Dumb and Dumber while the other is of the quality of Titanic.

Perhaps two less extreme examples.

But they're really not that different. Sci-fi and fantasy.

yeah i actually tried to throw LOTR into our top 25 sci fi movie list. sci fi and fantasy are pretty similiar genres imo. bc technically star wars is a fantasy movie.

I didn't mean to imply that. I just meant that: to me they are different genres. My brother loves star-wars but he's been having my LOTR disks for like a year now and just never watched it---"I don't like the elves and shite, man"

SciFi and fantasy are not too very different, you're right. I still think it's different enough to not be able to put SW and LOTR in the same category.

I agree that people can like one more than the other--but to say one is better than the other I think is not possible.

But i'm no siskel or ebert

At the time, Star Wars was groundbreaking. The special effects were leaps and bounds better than anything else.

There was no bigger WTF moment than Luke finding out Vader was his father.

Hard to have moments like that since script reviews hit the net before the movies have even started shooting.

Overall, I can rewatch LOTR over and over but I don't get the same rewatchability from Star Wars. Possibly because I have already seen them a million times.

The acting was far better by most in LOTR. The dialog was 100X better in LOTR discounting way too many "oh sams" from Frodo".

I can see younger fans liking LOTR more and older fans liking Star Wars more since it was truly groundbreaking.

I like LOTR more. I used to read the hobbit and LOTR every year. I only stopped reading it when I bought the BBC radio production of LOTR. Fantastic for long car trips or when stuck home sick.

Both have their place in history although the prequel will live on in infamy instead of famy.

Did you just say that the acting in LOTRs was better than Star Wars?!?! I can't decide if that's a serious statement or not. The LOTRs was just hours of walking and CGI. The original Star Wars movies are all-time and it's not because of the special effects or sci-fi stuff most people think. It's because the dialogue and characters were so believable.

I tried to watch the original Star Wars trilogy TWICE and couldn't do it. Nothing exciting about it at all imo. Sure, the effects were nice for its time but I thought overall it sucked.

This is an unpopular opinion...but I agree.

I'm from the Star Wars generation...I was 7 when A New Hope hit theaters, so I grew up with the original three. I loved them, of course. but as I've gotten older and can appreciate films for more than the cool monsters and neat space ships, I've found that Star Wars REALLY doesn't age well...at least for me. And it's NOT the FX, which actually do hold up fairly well in most cases...it's the writing and acting. Without Harrison Ford smirking through shitty George Lucas lines, it would be REALLY hard to watch at times. And when you consider just how bad the Ewoks are, you're really putting the Star Wars trilogy at a disadvantage to begin with.

OTOH, you've got LOTR which was written by a SLIGHTLY better writer than George Lucas, so the source material is infinitely better. In terms of acting, there are at least a handful of really great individual performances...and none anywhere near as bad as Mark Hamill.

As much as I love the original Star Wars movies, largely on nostalgia...I really don't find this to be close.

I hope to god that you are thinking peter jackson wrote this by saying george lucas is slightly worse.

If you are saying that jrr tolkien is only slightly better than george lucas then I can't agree with any points of your post.

ETA: or did you capitalize "slightly" to mean that jrrt is >>>>GL?

About SCIFI VS. Fantasy:

quote:

Science fiction and fantasy stories are make-believe tales. Fantasy stories are unlikely tales that have strange or imagined characters, places, or events. Science fiction stories are about life in the future or life on other planets.

Literature in the genres of fantasy and science fiction are closely related. Fantasies are stories that involve beings and events that do not exist in real life. These works may start on a realistic bent but they soon evolve into tales that could never really happen. Science fiction literature focuses on real or imagined developments in science or technology. All science-fiction and fantasy writers face a common challenge. They try to present worlds that are radically and intriguingly different from today's world. The basic themes of science fiction include time travel, space travel, marvelous inventions or discoveries, life in other worlds, and the invasion of Earth by beings from other planets.

Slightly is highlighted to emphasize the sarcasm... Of-fricking-course Tolkein is infinitely better than Lucas.

I think 90% of the time the opinion on which trilogy is better is going to come down to the age of the viewer. Most born...say before the early 80's are going to side with Star Wars. Most people after that are going to choose LOTR.

I suppose.

I was born in 74. As much as I love the original Star Wars Trilogy, I think it pales next to LOTR. I sat in the theater for Lord Of The Rings and watched Gandalf shout "YOU SHALL NOT PASS !!!!" with goosebumps thinking THIS is it. THIS is the movie I have been waiting to see my whole life.
