At the time, Star Wars was groundbreaking. The special effects were leaps and bounds better than anything else.
There was no bigger WTF moment than Luke finding out Vader was his father.
Hard to have moments like that since script reviews hit the net before the movies have even started shooting.
Overall, I can rewatch LOTR over and over but I don't get the same rewatchability from Star Wars. Possibly because I have already seen them a million times.
The acting was far better by most in LOTR. The dialog was 100X better in LOTR discounting way too many "oh sams" from Frodo".
I can see younger fans liking LOTR more and older fans liking Star Wars more since it was truly groundbreaking.
I like LOTR more. I used to read the hobbit and LOTR every year. I only stopped reading it when I bought the BBC radio production of LOTR. Fantastic for long car trips or when stuck home sick.
Both have their place in history although the prequel will live on in infamy instead of famy.

2 Of my top 5 Films of all time that are almost impossible to compare. Personally I prefer SW overall but I have seen both countless times.
If you dislike SW you have to be either some young ADD kid or a member of Al-Qaeda. If you have never seen them, then you shouldn't be allowed to give opinions on classics. It's like never having seen Goodfellas or Shawshank. Total Blasphemy.

Obviously just one opinion, but what in yours or anyone else's makes the LOTR series... what do you like most about it?
Personally I think the LOTR story is much better. Talking about the books. I'm just a huge Tolkien fan.
As far as the movies go I give Lucas his props. And Jackson was gift wrapped one of the greatest stories ever, but I credit him for not screwing it up. And like I mentioned the overall acting was better in LOTR. Great battle scenes. And multiple awesome bad guys that the director didn't ruin.

for me,
Cinematography was excellent
WETA props. this is huge when it comes to believability
epic battle scenes
i prefer the LOTR backstory/mythology to the SW one and that was heavily relied on in LOTR not SW
better character development
better books to draw from
stone/wood > metal/space

Star Wars > LOTR by a mile
How can you defend 9 hours of people walking?? This storyline should have ended in 30 minutes.
How it should have ended.

the books actually covered why that couldn't happen.

Doesn't make it less relevant.
Besides, Star Wars has Billy Dee Williams, which trumps all.

LOTR sucked arse. Star Wars all the way.

The only Star Wars I have ever made it through was Empire, and that Ewoks movie. I cant fricking stand star wars but to each their own. (Born in early 81). LOTR was a very good adaptation of a timeless series.

LOTR v. Star Wars
I think 90% of the time the opinion on which trilogy is better is going to come down to the age of the viewer. Most born...say before the early 80's are going to side with Star Wars. Most people after that are going to choose LOTR.
LOTR is incredible for what it is. I thoroughly enjoyed all the movies, and I think it's the next generation's "Star Wars." But for me, nothing will ever top the original Star Wars trilogy. It's not even a set of movies, it's practically apart of Americana. I think it's so much more woven into pop culture than LOTR.

Um...what? Does watching them "a million times" not equal rewatchability?

I am equally pissed at all of you MFers who are either A) running down LOTR or B) running down Star Wars.
Both series are awesome. I do not see how it is possible to love one series and hate the other. Sure, you can like one more than the other, but I do not believe anyone who loves one would hate the other.
I think all of you are full of shite.
FWIW, LOTR > Star Wars.
And that pains me to type.
