Basically Ben was going to use John to get back to the island after Ben killed Penny.
Once Ben got the ring he knew he could convince one (Sun) to come back, resulting in all (according to this episode). Then when John told Ben about Mamma Faraday getting them back, Ben realized he didn't need John anymore.
He figured he could do it all himself.
