Im not convinced that MIB and the Brother are the same thing. The brother was screwed, without a doubt. The smoke (or the evil part of the island) just uses the brother's appearance when he speaks with Jacob. Therefore, we do have a true antagonist, the smoke.
MIB may have only gone full evil when he became smokey, but he had a penchant for deceiving and lying as a kid. But smokey definitely has the brother in him. He shares the same desire to leave the Island, refers to his crazy mother - even in Locke's form, etc.

i just watched it and i thought it was decent not one of the better episodes of the year but it was a good one in my opinion. I just hope this episode doesn't turn out to be just a bridge between the episode where 4 our the main characters die to the last 2 episodes of the season. I really hope this helps the end in some way not just trying to fill wholes in the plot. Im scared it may do that

The black smoke IS NOT the MIB. It was >currently possessing< MIB the same way it is John Locke. Locke's body was left unharmed, so was MIB's, it rotted in the cave.
the smoke monster is it's OWN entity - a personification of the evil caused by the extinguishing of the light.
but, that's not to say it can't tap into the MIB's head the same way it does John Locke (don't tell me what i can't do)
And thus, MIB is the perfect host. If you came to an island, who would you be more likely to help, the guy who says he just wants to go home, or the swirling mass of evil that says it wants to get out into the world? The smoke uses MIB's own desire just to go home, to spread into the world.
Now, the "game" isn't something for the amusement of the two parties. Jacob is trying to find his successor, and MIB is trying to get out into the world.

quote:Jacob's brother is no more the smoke monster than Locke is right now. Both Jacob's brother and Locke are dead. We all saw both of their dead bodies. There may be some residual characteristics floating around inside the monster, but the smoke took the form of Jacob's brother and has now taken the form of Locke.
MIB is Jacob's brother and he became the smoke after he was thrown into the cave with the light. That much was pretty clear.

Then why did Titus Welliver tell Richard that Jacob took his humanity and his body? Richard did not know him and had not seen him before so it wouldn't have made a damn bit of diffence to him. MIB is Jacob's brother and he became the smoke after he was thrown into the cave with the light. That much was pretty clear.
When does he tell him this? I really dont remember

i like the rules part
quote:
For all that's been made about "the rules", i think it's pretty cut-and-dry, i was just over-thinking it. It's easiest if you think of it in a biblical sense (if you're not religious, bear with me, just for the sake of explanation) The devil just can't come to earth and kill everybody. Why? Because if he could that's what would have happened. No, he has to work using only his >influence< to get others to do what he wants. He can lie, cheat and steal do it, but he can't kill. Just the same, God can come down and "save" all of us. Why? Because he hasn't. Just like the devil, he has to work with influence. So the "game" is just that. A battle between good and evil, like any classic science/fantasy fiction story. And the stakes? The world as we know it.

Thinking back, how was Ben able to summon Smokie last season? He's always been on Team Jacob, it seems odd that pulling a lever in his house can call out Smokie.
Smokie very much needed Locke and Ben alive to where he probably would have saved their arse regardless.

quote:Yeah, she obviously has some sort of supernatural powers. The only type of powers we've seen like that is from Smokie. The natural inference is that she has Smokie qualities. I think the writers fully intended for us to come to that conclusion.
This is evidence that she had smoke characteristics.

It makes more sense that the smoke took the form of a man. Rather than a man (brother), who becomes smoke(MIB), who can now take the form of other people (locke). The smoke is free to take control of dead bodies. As he did with the brother and locke. In the Richard episode, I think the smoke took the form of Isabella to help convince Richard to kill the devil, Jacob. At the end of the episode, Isabella actually appears, but Richard cant see her. Only Hurley can, because he has that ability.

Not anymore.

It was Isabella that Hurley saw, not MIB.

Not so fast.
Jacob's brother and Jacob were told by Mother she made it so they would never be able to hurt each other (kill each other). Jacob also told Brother as he was throwing him in the cave, "don't worry brother, I am not going to kill you".

Yea I know, thats what I said. Isabella actually appears and Hurley can see her.

FWIW, I just checked the Lostpedia, and its editors have the brother, MIB, smoke monster all as one entity. So if correct, this debunks my theory.

So what was the point of the post? You told us things we figured out 7 weeks ago.

all this talk about MIB looking like other people, i started thinking about everyone he has looked like and i thought of one i dont think i have seen mentioned on here before. In a early Hurley episode where he was seeing the imaginary guy he used to see in the nuthouse. Was that the smoke monster trying to convince Hurley to jump off the cliff and kill himself, or was that all in hurleys head like before?

I think that was probably Smoky.

Well, he's dead in the sense that he doesn't have a body anymore. That is decomposing in the cave. Like I said, there are probably residual characteristics in Smokie, just like there are residual characteristics of Locke "Don't tell me what I can't do."

and when Jacob asked mother if going in the cave would kill him she said..no..its worse than death..or something like that
