I just dont get why everyone expected THIS episode to answer everything.
I wasn't expecting this episode to answer everything, but I was expecting whatever we had to be better than it was. It also presented some other questions that seem more important than the trivial shite that was answered.

So then if MIB gets off and messes up the rest of the world and it doesn't affect the island, then why does Jacob care?
Because Jacob won't get to prove his point that humans are good... THAT IS THE GAME.

i just thought this would be the episode with a bunch of answers and the rest of the episodes would be the resolution to the conflict.
This is exactly how I feel. I didn't dislike the episode but it sure didn't live up to expectations. And it doesn't seem to transition well to the last 2 episodes.
I've been anxiously looking forward to watching all the seasons again after the finale airs. It would be great to watch with full knowledge as things begin to unfold from season to season. Now I'm afraid it may just be a waste of time. Everything from the Egyptian stuff, to Horus, Walt, the cabin, the statue, the temple, the ash just seems to be pointless now.
They still have 3.5 hours left. I'll be hoping for the best. And that said, I can't wait for next Tuesday

Anyone else with they would have stayed away from this vague religious/philosophical bullcrap and stuck with the cool sci-fi time loop, parallel universe stuff?
i thought they went out of their way not to make it religious. (eta: when they asked what this place was i wanted the mother to say "it's eden")
i was even kind of hoping for some kind of tie in to good vs evil. it's not that either apparently.

It probably is. But at the time Jacob's Mother explained it to him, they still used wooden ships. They probably didn't know what a "naturally occuring nuclear energy source or something" was. So instead she explained it as something faith, or "religiousy". Just like people do for anything they can't understand.
And MIB's squad must have had some serious fricking geniuses in order to devise the shite that they were building.

fair enough I suppose...my biggest question going into the episode was who/what Jacob and MIB are...that was answered in a satisfactory manner so I'll let it play out from here.

I fear that this is true as well.

Naturally I'm rooting for MIB now but the way he kept getting his arse beat kind of disappoints me. I can't root for a man who let a 110 pound woman slam his head on a rock like a bitch.
Second...I don't care how ju-jitso they are...no way they killing all those motherfrickers by hand no less (ie. blood) and still covering up that huge fricking hole in the ground by the time MIB gets up from his concussion....then they're back to the other side of the Island like nothing happened.
I'm going on record as saying frick this show; I havent missed a night since the first season. Now I'm just pissed off.
Make Hurley king of Marshmellow Island and just be done with it. fricking Candyland.

I still would like to know why MIB is "special"? How was this woman omnipotent with all matters related to the island? Who was this woman? Why did she snap and kill Claudia right after MIB was born?

yeah this is my biggest fear now, i'm lowering expectations for the next 3.5 hours and hopefully i'll be wrong.

at the time she WAS the keeper of the island's whatever (light/spirit) and she could make others immortal, we always thought Jacob to be a badass, I'm assuming she was to an extent as well

go back and listen to the woman talk to Claudia. She tells you that you aren't getting an answer.

Good questions, I do associate alot of her characteristics with what we thought the MIB to be. He quotes her, she believes all humans to be inherritantly evil, she didnt seem to have problems lying.

I'm not buying it. None of the others MIB killed had evidence of hand to hand physical violence like these did. He just killed them...heart attack or whatever...if you pull the screen shots, all those guys had blood over them. Its like they were beaten.
I'm just not buying this. Jacob never whooped anybodies arse and I'm doubting she could either using supernatural powers. Otherwise she wouldn't have had to turn that woman's head into a Halloween pumpkin at the beginning of the show.
Still not buying the hole in the ground. That was a big arse cave they dug out.

I'll admit... I like any and every scene with the smoke (Smokey) in it. That is the only way that this episode truly delivered.
It's impossible to explain how a man becomes a smoke monster. The answer of his body passing into a cave of Pulp Fiction light is probably as good of an explanation as a writer can give. And I'm ok with that.
This episode seems (at this point) to have fallen short on many other things though. We'll see in a week.

he picked Mr. Echo up and swung him every which way to Sunday, he fricked 815 pilot's world up into like a tree. He threw some of Keame's men around when Ben released him, he fricked up an entire temple's worth of people. These are just off the top of my head. I dont even know why you're bringing MIB into this part of the discussion. I thought we were talking about the woman and Jacob being badasses.
