bingo. i think at some point in his life MIB made a deal with Jacob (similar to Richards) maybe he said hey ill do this if you give me the ability to be a kick arse smoke monster thing - all this worked for awhile then MIB decided frick this, and wanted out of the deal/contract he made with jacob thus needing a loophole

New discoveries
-How the ship got inland.
-How the statue was destroyed.
-When Richard arrived.

Already knew/assumed.
-Jacob was in charge of keeping MIB on the island.
-Jacob is all about "the good in people" w/o manipulating them.
-Island is a "prison" for MIB.

Also, dead people are hanging around the island, even if they died off of the island.

Source of the whispers?

You may have thought that this was what was going on, but there is no way you could "know" it until last night's episode. That's what makes it a "reveal." They could have gone in any number of directions before last nights show.

Who put Jacob in his current position?

I don't know if we'll ever get that answer, but I'm okay with that.

quote:

Why does he need to have a replacement? If he is powerful enough to grant immortality to Richard, surely he could handle the MIB on his own once and for all.

By the rules of the game, he can't harm MIB.

quote:

Where did MIB come from and what is his back story?

Same as Jacob. They are the two players in the game.

quote:

Who created the island?

We won't get that answer and I'm glad. There isn't a good answer to that question.

quote:

Why were the characters selected out of all the people in the world for this "game" or "experience" on the island?

Good question. It could be random or it could be that each has some unique quality that Jacob thinks he can use.

Mee too. That angle is so played out. It sucked on 12 Monkees, its sucked on every other episode of the Twilight Zone. IT would suck badly for Lost. Its gimmicky

This is a different type of reset; it would be more like the Matrix.

The resets you are talking about involve the action never taking place.

The action takes place here. The reset is simply the next round of competition. It isn't undoing the previous events; its just reseting the pieces.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still say any kind of "reset" ending will be a lame copout and no matter what you compare it to it will be ripping off some other movie. Weak sauce.

Can someone please explain why Jacob is justified in putting the entire world in jeopardy to prove a philosophical point to an eternally damned being?

Because he isn't concerned about humanity or the world. He simply wants to win the game.

For a more light-hearted look at things, did the scene at the end of the episode, where Jacob to MIB the bottle of wine, remind anyone else of the old Ralph and Sam (sheepdog/wolf) cartoons?

I disagree...There is more to it than a simple game. Take Locke's explanation of backgammon for example - good and evil...their clothing - black and white. They are there for a reason.

I'm just speculating. If we are to believe that it was actually Richard's wife who was talking to Hurley and who appeared when Hurley tried to talk Richard into not going to MIB, then that would be proof that not all dead people who appear on the island are a manifestation of MIB. If you are familiar with the whispers, some of them suggest that there are unseen actors who sometimes appear to be trying to influence events on the island. I'm just wondering if some of these whispers are people who have already died...like Boone for example.

Oh they certainly confirmed some things last night but since I had already assumed them it didn't make them a big reveal for me personally.

I'm just speaking about my opinion of the episode & everyone will have their own take. Certainly not bashing the episode/series by any means.

I honestly don't think there's a neat solution that will make people happy. They will tie together the major themes, but they'll leave a lot of big issues unanswered and leave it to audience interpretation (bullshite)
