I found this movie completely overrated. Sure, some creepy stuff. With a lot of weird acting and unbelievable shite.
Not for one second couldn’t believe The lead was an FBI agent. And the bullshite around the investigation was so distracting.
I knew the mother was involved because what sane bitch has hair like that.
I honestly would put this down there with some of the worst things I’ve seen in theaters this year

I thought it was utter shite.
-half the Nice Cage scenes could be cut and it wouldnt affect the movie they went nowhere. the movie even ruins Longlegs reveal several times before it truly matters
-so it's all just random, broad black magic/Satanism? very poorly explained and lazy
-the FBI does jack shite in this movie. Longlegs give Lee everything
-wtf is that ending? Why wouldn't Lee stop her boss from murdering his wife? just waits to then murder him, her mom, and then take the kid out?
-no one acts like an actual person in the movie. the main character has no story arc.
it's a movie that "happens because it just happens." there's no rhyme or reason for anything.

Also how utterly stupid that the medical facility didn’t make people present an ID.could there bit a shitty facility like that and that happen? Sure, but it’s highly unlikely. This movie takes place in the 1990s. Jean Valjean from Les Miserables was having to present his id to get into cities in the 1820s…

they also didnt have cameras....
again like everything in this movie, "it happens because it happens." no actual thought behind anything.

far-fetched with the supernatural element

it works. Since it is a Satanic cult with some kind of crazy voodoo magic.

It’s more believable than just a random person showing some magic abilities.
quote:
he does worship the devil and has crazy voodoo magic from the devil.
....what?
so because they threw the word "Satan" into it, you now buy into everything? but if "Satan" isnt mentioned, it's totally unbelievable?

There are hints over and over of people being controlled by Satan even by proxy. The autopsy of the doll for instance is a huge giveaway as to the power this has.
The ending makes total sense for two reasons, both of which one has to infer because of the ambiguity, which I love that they did. It leaves open the idea that Satan still exists, will always exist and will find new harbingers to carry out its' evil plan.
It also leaves open the idea that Lee, now fresh from being weighed down from evil due to the pact her mom made, is now open, just as everyone in the room, to the dangers of what Longlegs made. That doll's power doesn't just end with her because now she's awake. It begins again with her.
Notice how she pulls the trigger but nothing happens. Do you really think the evil would die with Longlegs? Do you really think Lee even had a choice in the matter? Longlegs' work was done and so was her mother's. Now it's Lee's turn to make the bargain, to protect the child, to carry out the plan just as her mother did.
The more I think about the movie, the more I struggle to find another film that depicts evil in such a tangible, realistic way. Maybe The Exorcist but that becomes more good vs. evil. In Longlegs, good doesn't concur evil. We misconstrue that even being a possibility when at first we think Lee is psychic but really, there is no power but the evil that guides her.
The film is simply the dread of knowing and not being able to change a thing. It's a film that punishes the believer and the unbeliever equally. No, this has nothing to do with good vs. evil. Of films that perhaps come close, maybe Angel Heart, a neo noir flick that truly signifies ignorance is bliss or maybe Jacob's Ladder, a never ending nightmare of the mind and fleshed out depiction of hell, purgatory and perdition or maybe Seven, but even that film follows the same principle but in reverse as The Exorcist. A sinful man doling out justice to the perceived unjust. A man, tantamount to a God...no, this film is something entirely different and its message is entirely unique.
Another unique point of the film is that Nic Cage's character though creepy and seemingly pedophilic, isn't at all. He's simply content to sleep on a mattress, devoid of all trappings, in a shitty basement. He comes and goes not at his will but to the will of the evil he worships. He lives in seclusion as a devout acolyte of evil. He wants nothing. He takes nothing. He simply is a messenger who dedicates his life to crafting exactly what is needed to carry out evil's plan. He doesn't kill. He simply creates the avenue for death to carry out. He is simply a friend of a friend.
He only is caught when evil says he is to be caught. He freely gives himself up and packs his bags, not to run away, but to continue on evil's intent via his writings. He carries himself far away from his accomplice as her role isn't nearly complete and when his time is done, he dutifully accepts his end and smashes his head into dust.
Why do you think Lee's mother destroyed Lee's doll? Evil wanted her to be awake so Lee would be forced into the same bargain Lee's mother, Longlegs, etc. had made.
It's never truly fleshed out who exactly her father is, but in the beginning when Lee is subjected to the FBI's testing of her ability, when a symbol of a triangle appears, she says the word "father." We later see that 666 triangle symbol as she solves the killer's algorithm.
Could that mean that she was corrupted at birth? Could that mean Longlegs is her father? Well, we don't quite know. Are we to believe that Lee's mother truly was devout entirely for the sake of her daughter? To do all those unspeakable acts without ever once getting caught? Evil is in control the entire time. Evil is never not in control. We are just continually misdirected in thinking somehow good will get the upper hand.
We will never explicitly know, but following the logic and the poem Longlegs leaves Lee, it becomes quite clear that she was chosen for a purpose. If that were the case, that would obviously mean from birth and much like Lee's "hunch" at the beginning of the film, Longlegs operated in the same way. Maybe that's why it's never brought up, not by her superior, not by her mother, not by Longlegs, etc. It's an accepted truth much like Lee being blinded to the basement and the man downstairs. We see what the evil wants us to see.
Are we as viewers just as blind as Lee to the truth of her origin? I think so. It's all very interesting to me. I'm sorry you didn't like it.

All fair points, and I rant about the black magic and ending in the previous thread.
However, I find most horror movies have absurd mishaps in their plots, so I think I hold the genre to a lower standard

yeah but it's "just because." there is no explanation of what the metal is or does. it's a mcguffin. Extremely lazy.

except she doesnt make the bargain. the film explicitly showed us what that looks like. she doesnt agree to do anything.

I would love to see your dissertation on The Last Jedi. You have an incredible gift for make shite sound like a masterpiece.

A lot of the film is implicit, but there is some that is explicit. They show you what's in the metal. They even show you the shadowy evil. They show you the construction. They show its release. They show its effect. They tell you Longlegs' philosophy. They show you everything. This isn't what's in the briefcase or the maltese falcon, this is clear, it is defined, it is shown and it is described. Hell, you even hear it at the autopsy.
The ending is however implicit. You don't see what happens but can infer what does happen. We only have the logic of the film to dictate what the ending likely is and I think it's a creation of a new upside down triangle and a new pact.
As to the Last Jedi, I never saw it. frick Disney.

Why the frick do you decide to go investigate a former murder scene at a farm in the dead of night?

Wife and I really enjoyed it. The final act was the weakest part but solid film, overall
