First off let me say I love the movie and it’s one of the best sports movies to be made. Not to mention it’s hysterical. But the overall plot does make me laugh. If an owner intentionally sand bags their own club and threatens to release every player following the season id imagine they’d not only have trouble with the league (which obviously wants every team to be as competitive as possible) they’d probably have a lot of trouble with the players unions as well. What’s the boards thoughts on the movie? Always been one of my favorites.

Thats basically what they did. Sandbagged and collected revenue sharing until they could turn all the picks into something, which resulted in the WS win.

Seemed like everybody was a new signing besides Dorn and Harris. If they just let the rest of the team leave they'd just have to meet a salary floor.

Major League is one funny movie.
The tanking of games and the wholesale emptying of rosters have been done in the past. It's almost never attempted as openly as you see in this movie but it had to be played that way for additional drama.

She doesn't even go full bore with it. There were several players that were good enough to trade away during the season as well as guys who could have been dropped to the minors for even worse players to keep the losing going but she never does it.
Of course that's partly to do with the fact that in the original ending it turns out everything she was doing was actually supposed to be to motivate them to play better. It was only after test screenings that they made her be a villain the whole way through.

Yep. Mays and Cerrano would have been sought after by other teams and even Harris was apparently having a solid season despite the fact he was older than dirt.

I was 6 or 7 when the marlins won. So I do not really remember any of the front office decisions of that time very well.

I may be wrong, but weren’t a bunch of clubs leases with their cities dependent upon maintaining attendance back in the 80s? So if the team tanked they could move without league interference?
