Sure, we all know and love the John Hughes stuff. We worship the majesty that is Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

But there are other, lesser known movies that I just love.

The post yesterday on Vision Quest got me thinking about them.

First to mind was Tuff Turf:

James Spader plays a East Coast blue blood kid recently moved to LA. He's a bad boy rebel with a good heart. In the opening scene he happens on the local gang mugging a guy and foils their play, making himself dead meat.

The gang leader, Nick, is written and played as a psychopath that you REALLY want to hate. His girlfriend is the OT 9.99 Kim Richards, who I still have a crush on to this day. That smokey voice just kills me.

One of the things I like about this movie is that the hero is no Mary Sue. Spader's Morgan Hellar gets his arse handed to him on multiple run-ins with the Tuffs.

Bonus, it's got the Jim Carrol band and their awesome song People Who Died as a signature sound track favorite.

Next, One that is just perfect for me from start to finish:

Kevin Costner plays the "leader" of some recently graduated from the University of Texas friends "the Groovers". They are all of draft age and the Viet Nam war is still on progress. Judd Nelson is the gung ho ROTC officer that is determined to go die for his country. The others, well they aren't so certain.

But before they decide, they set out on a mission to the South Texas Border to "go dig up Dom".

Hijinks and hilarity ensues.

The whole Sky Diving stuff makes me laugh until I almost piss myself.

But under the comedy is a true coming of age story, with the gut punch of the reality of growing up. Friends on their last hoorah before adulthood shoves out the last vestiges of childhood.

Bonuses: Great Texas landscapes, history, and feel. I've actually been to where they dig up Dom. And, a beautifully scripted Fandango last dance with the bittersweet sentiment of Costner giving up his once true love to his friend. Lastly, fantastic closing song Can't Find My Way Home by Blind Faith.

Lastly:

Secret Admirer:

Another "Teen Movie" that isn't John Hughes.

Awesome cast in C. Thomas Howell, Lori Loughlin, Kelly Preston. Two parallel story lines of misunderstanding: The teens, C. Thomas Howell, Lori Loughlin, and Kelly Preston on who wrote the love letter.

And at the same time, their parents, including Remo Williams and Tremors great Fred Ward, thinking there's an affair going on due to the letter.

Add in Corey Haims as the little brother and a cast of misfits as C. Thomas's friends, just a great under the radar movie.

Have y'all seen these?

Did you like them?

What's some others?

Damn! I've never seen them, and I don't remember them. They actually sound quite interesting, though!

Here's one that I used to love, but most of my friends have never seen it/heard of it. The Ice Pirates

It's a little different from the examples you gave, but it's the right timeframe!

So many throw away lines that are fantastic.

This silly scene is old school nowhere Texas at its finest:

ICE PIRATES!!!

I had forgotten about that one. Perfect example.

Everyone was cashing in on the Sci-Fi and Post apocalyptic craze and this movie bridged the two really well considering their budget.

I present to you a great lost 80's comedy. Losin' It.

The critics hated it and it didn't do well at the box office but it was comedic gem. 3 teenagers head down to Tijuana to lose their virginity, with a younger brother tagging along to buy illegal fireworks. They pick up a woman looking for a divorce from her husband and teen sex comedy hijinks ensure.

Starring Tom Cruise, Shelley Long, Jackie Earl Haley, and John Stockwell (who went on to become a director).

Hell yeah man.

That's the movie, along with Breaking Away, that got me in to bike racing. 25 years later and I'm still riding at least 2-3 times a week.

I own the DVD, and have the movie poster on the wall in my media room.

As for Valley Girl (posted above), I love this movie too. One of my favorites. Deborah Foreman was so hot. Fantastic soundtrack with songs from The Sparks and Plimsouls.

Not your typical 80's movies, but some movies that were released in the 80's that not enough people have seen.

William Holden's final film.

Diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer, Patrick Foley (William Holden) has returned to his native Australia to die in the peace and quiet of the wilderness. His simple plan is complicated, however, when he meets Shawn Daley (Ricky Schroder), a young boy who has just lost his parents in an accident, and takes him under his wing. Located far from any civilization, Patrick continues on his mission, but decides to teach Shawn the skills that he'll need to survive after his mentor is dead.

quote:

As the teacher at a small school in rural Australia, Sally Jones (Rachel Ward) leads a rather mundane life. However, for her and nine of her students, all of that changes when a band of criminals breaks into their school to take them hostage. Dragging the teacher and children to the outback, the kidnappers intend to hold their victims for ransom. But Jones has other plans. Leading her pupils, Jones turns on her captors and fights to first survive and then escape.

After New York City firefighter Terry Lynch (Robert Urich) is unable to receive any compensation for an injury incurred during the off-duty rescue of a young girl, he grows suicidal. Furious, his brother Jimmy (Timothy Hutton) attempts to have Mayor Tyler (Robert Culp) intervene, but the corrupt politician instead denounces Terry as a drunk. Determined to get justice, Terry begins a graffiti campaign of embarrassing slogans mocking the mayor, which soon captivates the city.

Bunker Hill Military Academy has been targeted by real estate developers for demolition. The students, outraged at the thought of their school being turned into condominiums, vow to fight back. Led by Cadet Maj. Brian Moreland (Timothy Hutton), they stage a school-wide rebellion that ends with them in charge of the campus. After winning over the headmaster (George C. Scott), Brian and his fellow cadets, Alex (Sean Penn) and David (Tom Cruise), face their toughest battle yet -- with the Army.

I've seen all of these except Fortress. I'll have to check it out.

The Earthling came on HBO back in the day. I remember it being really good, if sad. But I liked it.

Taps was another one that is pretty heavy content for an 80's movie. Another one where you feel sad when it's over, but glad you watched it.

I just thought two more:

High school student Dan Bartlett (John Cusack) misses the plane he was supposed to be on with his rich girlfriend and her family on the way to a Caribbean vacation during a school break. He flies there alone, and runs into a series of characters and misadventures as he tries to catch up. Ganja-smoking island natives give him a lift in their vehicle, but they don't quite make it as the family takes off on a chartered yacht. A crusty old sailor (Robert Loggia) with his own reasons takes up the chase with Bartlett on a decrepit sailboat. Bartlett then runs into corrupt cops and winds up in jail. Finally, he catches up to the yacht, only to find that the family has been taken hostage by pirates. He comes to the rescue.

Sure, everyone knows John from classics like One Crazy Summer and Say Anything. But have you seen this one?

And another great lesser know:

High school senior Walter Gibson and his best friend Lance are celebrating the fact they are moving on to college, but all Walter can do is lament the fact that he has lost his touch with women. Lance heads to UCLA while Walter moves on to college in New England. The two keep in touch by writing letters, but Walter's luck has not changed. His attempt to get close to Alison Bradbury from his English class by tricking her into tutoring him only results in his angering and alienating her. Eventually he receives a phone call from Lance telling him to come to California for Christmas break because he has set him up with a beautiful girl, assuring him she is a Sure Thing
