Solo flopped because it was on the heels of The Last Jedi and because nobody can replace Harrison Ford as Han Solo
It was way more SW fatigue than a different Solo actor.
Solo was actually great IMO. It takes a little bit to get going, but once it hits its stride it settles in and is really good, and the second half of it is great. I'll stand by my sentiment that it's a top five SW film. It's a fun movie.

Same. Wasn't there "reports" that they had to hire an onset acting coach for him because he was "so bad"? Don't know if the reason because he was playing an iconic character or making him the fall guy.
I think so. he was good in Hail Caesar. idk. the rumors were wild coming out of this one. one was that the original director made it feel like an ace Ventura movie.

it couldnt be that starwars fatigue is reaching marvel level fatigue.....certainly not.
or that almost none of the offerings has had writing stronger than a children's book.

Sure, why not. Maybe we’ll get an entire series devoted to C 3PO as well. We can follow him from the time he was parts on a shelf

I mean, they originally hired Lorde and Miller, most famous for the Jump Street movies

Seriously, what did they expect? I was looking forward to a buddy action comedy in space starring Lando and Han a la Guardians of the Galaxy meets 21 Jump Street. I hope the Lorde & Miller cut leaks on the internet somewhere someday

Solo is very underrated. Just got fricked over by the sequel trilogy.

the Russo Brothers were directing Community episodes before they did Winter Soldier.
but yeah maybe a good director would have been smart.

They’re great directors for buddy action comedies. I cannot imagine a better choice for that type of movie. My best guess as to what happened is someone at the Studio saw the success of Guardians of the Galaxy and wanted to do something similar with Star Wars. They hired Lorde & Miller with the intention of making a fun comedy heist adventure movie in space. However, someone else at Lucas film saw some of the early scenes and had a conniption because it didn’t match their vision for Star Wars, causing the tonal shift to try to be this gritty dramatic movie which it wasn’t meant to be.
Solo turned out alright, albeit a fairly routine “color by the numbers” origin story, but the movie does feel a little unfocused, like much of the Disney Star Wars content outside of Andor, Rogue One, and the first couple seasons of Mandalorian. Ron Howard did a great job cobbling together a decent film out of all of the various pieces he was given, but I can’t help but think there was a more interesting and entertaining film idea in there than what we ended up with.
I think Lorde & Miller were hired to do exactly what they’re great at, but then were fired for doing exactly that because studios are places full of power-struggles and egotistical morons.
