Ken Berry, a popular TV actor in the 1960s and ’70s who starred in “F-Troop,” “Mama’s Family” and “Mayberry R.F.D.,” died Saturday.

His former wife, actress Jackie Joseph-Lawrence posted the news on Facebook. “F-Troop” co-star Larry Storch wrote on Facebook, “We hope you know how much you were loved. Goodnight Captain.”

Berry played Captain Parmenter on Western sitcom “F-Troop” for two years in the mid-1960s.
quote:

Berry appeared as widowed farmer Sam Jones on “The Andy Griffith Show” and transitioned into the lead as the show spun off as “Mayberry R.F.D.” He played Vinton Harper on the “Carol Burnett Show” spinoff “Mama’s Family” from 1983 to 1984, which starred Vicki Lawrence, Rue McClanahan and Betty White.

“Mayberry R.F.D.” ran from 1968 to 1971, when the folksy smalltown sitcom was cancelled as more contemporary shows such as “All in the Family” came on the air.
quote:

He also appeared in comedy films “Herbie Rides Again” and “The Cat From Outer Space” and made frequent guest appearances on shows including “The Golden Girls,” “Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island” and “CHiPs.”

Born in Moline, Ill., Berry started out as a singer and dancer. He served in the U.S. Army special services under Sergeant Leonard Nimoy, entertaining the troops and winning a slot on the “Ed Sullivan Show.”

Nimoy helped introduce him to studios after he left the Army, and soon Berry was under contract to Universal to appear in movie musicals. Berry worked in several musical revues, including with Abbot and Costello, and with Lucille Ball. Carol Burnett also worked with Berry, who later became a frequent guest on her show.

After brief stints on “Dr. Kildare” and George Burns-Connie Stevens sitcome “Wendy and Me,” he landed his first regular starring role on “F-Troop.”

Funny, I was just reading about him last night. I knew him from Mayberry RFD and Mama's Family, but had no idea about the stage/casino career.

Growing up watching reruns, it seemed like there were more seasons of F-Troop and Mama’s Family.

The actress that played Berry's love interest Wrangler Jane on F-Troop was 16 when she got the job. She forged a birth certificate saying she was 18. Berry couldn't kiss her on the show because of her age.

Article dates about Mama’s Fsmily are off. Apparently, they only counted the two years the show was on NBCand left out the several years the show filmed and ran exclusively in syndication.

Well, there would have been more episodes in a season when F-Troop was filmed.

One of the running gags on F Troop was that the Indians had yiddish accents. The chief was played by Frank De Kova,an Italian American who made his living playing ethnic parts such as Mexican bandits and Hawiaans.

F Troop was a spinoff of an obscure 1964 film called Advance To The Rear.

quote:

As punishment for their incompetence in battle, disgraced Union soldier Capt. Jared Heath (Glenn Ford) and his apathetic commanding officer, Col. Claude Brackenbury (Melvyn Douglas), are reassigned away from the front lines. The hapless Heath and Brackenbury must now lead a ragtag group on a classified mission to protect a transport for the U.S. Treasury. Complicating matters is Martha Lou Williams (Stella Stevens), a Confederate agent posing as a lady of the evening.

Wow. I did not know he was a triple threat: actor, singer, dancer.

It shouldn't surprise me as most in that era grew up on (or in) vaudeville and versatility was almost a prerequisite to make it and stay in showbiz.

An underrated actor because of the roles he played. Was very good.

First Bush, now him, so who's the 3rd? Please not Betty White.
