Just watched the Green Lantern for the first time ever...

Somehow, never got around to watching it until today. Kinda having a DC weekend I guess. I gotta say, I enjoyed this one as well. I’ve heard some say here that it sucks, but I didn’t catch anything bad about it. It was a cookie cutter comic movie, but what isn’t these days.
Reynolds played the part just as well as Deadpool. If he’s really gonna be in the JL Snyder Cut, then it should be fun.

I think Geoff Johns was more concerned with getting his ideas from the recent comics into the movie than he was about making a good Green Lantern movie. You ended up with good ideas, too much product placement, and jabs at the superhero format. They didn’t mesh into much of a movie.

Honestly just could have spent more time on character development over 2 movies rather than cramming into 1.

All of this.
Reynolds was actually a great choice for Hal, but they got a little too wacky with it. I actually enjoy the film, and I think Hal Jordan is a Top 5 all time hero, but it just didn't mesh well.

yeah, i mean, i did find it odd that right after Hal meeting Abin Sur, the first thing he did was take the ring/lantern home to do the oath. like no questions were asked.

i had the same reactions a few years ago. it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. by the numbers super hero stuff.

I think that the fans who knew the most about Green Lantern were let down the most. With the Corps it’s one of the richest supporting casts in comics.

We got Cyborg before we got Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern in the DCEU...shame.

no accounting for taste

I only saw it once and never had a desire to go back. It was a vomit fest of CGI just before CGI quality was good enough to get away with that.
Only good thing I remember is that movie is the reason Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are married and have kids. The world could use more people as good looking as those two.

My rant on the Green Lantern movie was they tried cramming a trilogy's worth of material into one movie.
First movie should have been the standard discovery and eventual increased aptitude with powers with Hector Hammond as his enemy, introducing Sinestro as a mentor. Sinestro's despotism is hinted at.
Second movie begins mid-battle with Sinestro being defeated, flashbacks showing his crimes but also showing some members of the GL Corps repeatedly bringing up that Sinestro's sector of space was the most orderly so maybe he was onto something.
Parallax is introduced as it takes over Hal. Hal is working his way through the Corp so they release the "greatest Lantern of all-time": Sinestro. With Sinestro's aid they drive Parallax out of Hal, but Sinestro takes it and vanishes. End of the movie shows Sinestro in his yellow gear and surrounded by those who were seeming to show support for him (also in Sinestro Corp gear).
Third movie is the recovering GL Corps against the Sinestro Corps. Straight up action for almost the entire movie. Maybe have Parallax attempt to re-take Hal once it realizes Sinestro will lose and then have Hal rebuff it (now that he's learned how to - possible tie in to being egotistical being a weakness Parallax can exploit to gain a host?).
Reynolds has become far too iconic as Deadpool and the original writing had Hal far too much as a Tony Stark clone (behavior-wise). I might re-write Hal in the beginning as being more of a prick then having him evolve over time into a more thoughtful and humble person.

Consider, the Ring was a conditional Genie, for all practical purposes. Green Lantern could be stronger than Superman, faster than the Flash... if he had the will to be. Traditionally, there were only 3 weaknesses to his power- the color yellow (I know, it's a comic book thing); doubt; and the 24 hr charge before he had to recharge that. Yellow made it so he had to employ decent tactics, and set Sinestro as opposite but equal. Doubt made it an essential story plot to have to overcome- this fit the Star Sapphire sub plot. And the time limit tended to make the stories concise, he had to wrap shite up in a day, or go recharge.
Outside of that, the stories were usually SF bordering on magical fantasy, with high emphasis on the visual elements and constructs.
Yeah, the movie was a huge letdown. I wanted them to do it seriously, and full-powered: make him have the power of a god, but challenge his will every step of the way.
