Spoilers although you don’t want to watch this movie
It’s got great people, Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, and the acting is fantastic

I think this is the worst movie I’ve ever seen though, as far as plot and story line goes.

It’s supposed to be about two brothers and their wives who go to a super fancy dinner to discuss how to handle a horrible crime committed by their kids. The crime is horrible, they set a homeless woman on fire after basically torturing her, and part of the issue is that Richard Gere is running for governor.

Here’s the thing though, they don’t even get into that discussion until the very end of the movie pretty much, seriously 2/3 of the movie is just montages of Steve Coogan’s mental health deteriorating, there is literally a five minute documentary segment about the battle of Gettysburg for pretty much no reason at all.

I’m not kidding there are about 50 plot lines in this movie that never get resolved, all showed through flash backs, Laura Linney had cancer, the brothers mom has mental health issues, the one brother lost his job as a teacher bc of his issues, Richard Gere and his first wife adopted a black kid, we never get details on ANY OF THAT.

We get ramblings about war and history (and I’m a fricking history teacher so I’m not bashing war and history), we have random scenes of them walking at the Gettysburg battlefield, NONE OF THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE PLOT and is never mentioned again.

Here is the kicker, the climax is Laura Linney trying to talk her BIL (Gere) out of having a press conference about the event, then Coogan goes over to apparently kill the black nephew because he knows about it, and then it JUST ENDS. I’m not kidding, it ends, don’t know if they told anybody, don’t know if Richard Gere has the press conference, we think Coogan didn’t kill his nephew but we don’t actually know that either.

I’m sorry if my explanation is hard to understand, I promise it’s 100X more coherent than this movie.

I’m so confused, it was great acting, expensive looking sets and camera work, but it’s like they mashed 15 movies into one and then didn’t actually explain any of them or conclude any of the stories.

The worst movie I’ve ever seen, because nothing was resolved and nothing really happened, they give all these interesting plots and then they just dissapear.

The Room is 8X more coherent than this movie

It’s a two hour public service announcement about mental health

I’m 100% serious. Actually I teach about Gettysburg and I’m pretty sure I recognized the voice over guy talking from the battlefields.org website.

And let me reiterate that the Battle of Gettysburg has nothing at all to do with this movie

It took me 3 times to finish the damn movie.. I don’t know why I did because your description is spot on.. I guess I was just hoping to get some type of resolution and relief to what I was actually watching .. the acting was solid, the characters at times interesting and what you assume is the main plot was an intriguing albeit superficial view into family dynamics and the cinematic process of personal responsibility

But the ending clamoring about his mental health bill getting enough votes just made it worse as I realized the whole fricking movie was a farce that was never meant to have any real closure other than a diatribe about the need for mental health reform.. Of course, you could see that was an overriding factor of the movie but still, give me something you fricking assholes..

I read the book a few years ago and it quickly became my least favorite book of all time.

Does the book end the same way? Was the author/director planning for a sequel but the story just sucks so it’s not happening? I understand the nuance in an ambiguous ending, but I’ve never seen a story that just stops before it ends.

I mean they’re literally fighting, crying, arguing and then boom, fade to black, the end

The wife and I watched this on Netflix a while back. We had never heard of it but saw the actors and gave it a shot.

Pretty bad movie, super slow burn. About an hour in we had to just plow through to the finish.

Maybe it can only be understood by people who are mentally ill?

That’s an odd choice for a movie but maybe
