Maybe I'm just not sophisticated enough or something to get this movie but both me and my friend who watched it chose it because it was on many people's list as a top movie ever made, had deniro, pesci, Scorsese and nominated for many awards so we gave it a shot, and we both thought it wasnt just overrated but terrible. I mean this movie seemed awful. There wasnt hardly a plot atall the pacing was terrible it would jump forward massively in time without any indication to the audience. Anyone else feel this way or am I just some lowly pleb who cant understand artistic film making. I did enjoy joe pesci though.

It's a melodrama, but it's shot in black and white so you know it's smart.

I feel the same way. Found it boring.

Similarly I think Taxi Driver is incredibly overrated as well.

Buy that type of movie was in vogue in the late 70s

I can understand if it was groundbreaking at the time but that's no reason to act like its still a great movie

Have seen it rated as the best "Sports Movie" ever, but I don't think it's even that. It was pretty special when it came out because De Niro was such a star, and we'd heard about how he got in the best shape of his life for the prime LaMotta scenes, and then gained weight for the older La Motta scenes. It was black & white and the boxing scenes were better than most boxing movies had been. I don't know if it's a case of not holding up well, or just never was special. I didn't like it like everyone else when I first saw it, and can't sit through it now, but lots of folks love it.

Not a big fan of The Deer Hunter either. The prison scenes, the escape, and the roulette scenes are great, but most of the rest of it is boring. These two movies were better than most of the crap he has done this century. Ronin is tha last thing he did that's worth rewatching for me.

I liked it, but it's not on my list of top/favorite films.

Loved Taxi Driver though

Rocky is better. And not just the boxing aspect.

Both Siskel and Ebert ranked it as the #1 movie of the 80's.

Deer Hunter is Ambien.

I don't think Cimino ever cut. He just kept filming.

This is how i feel about Serpico.

Dog Day Afternoon was a million times more interesting than Serpico.

I agree, I watched it once about 10 yrs ago haven’t thought of it since. It’s incredibly overrated besides Deniro’s acting is good. As time goes on it needs to slide down the GOAT lists considerably.

I guess I'm the only one who likes it? It's one of my favorite Scorsese movies. Love the flashing camerawork of the fights, and the effort they go to to show how LaMotta saw himself as a hero when he was little more than a crash test dummy for Sugar Ray's fists. The "You never got me down" scene is tragic-cringe to the next level.

I also love the opening hour of The Deer Hunter...

Not to derail the thread, but the "boringness" some of think of in the Deer Hunter is actually what makes the character arc in the film just so devastating and authentic.

The wedding scene, in particular, yes, is a bit long, but it shows how these people love each other, then, after the war, are never the same.

The subtlety in that film is brilliant. I actually think the stuff post war scenes of DeNiro back in Pennsylvania are the best in the movie... Not the war stuff.

He can't even bear to go his own coming home party... It's heartbreaking.

Only Walken and Savage can understand him now, but they are both so far gone, he's virtually alone in the wilderness now. Only with Streep is he able to even find any kind of comfort again..

But before, they were all so naive and carefree.

Raging Bull though, Lamotta is just a monster, who hates himself more than anyone else. It's a riveting Deniro performance and it's still one of the greateat acting perofmances ever, especially the end jail scene.

Do I want watch Raging Bull every month or even every year,... No... But it's still deserves the acclaim it gets.
