Being a die hard Star Trek fan and being really disappointed at Star Trek Discovery, I have been a little late to the dance.
I have to say that after watching this campy series it is more Start Trek-like than Discover ever has been..Even in its comedy it still deals with the same controversial issues that Trek has always done and it's a fine product.
Good Product

It grew on me too.
It's like a Star Trek that follows the C students from the academy instead of the best.

That’s a great description.

They've done a Trek knock off well enough that I could see spin off series coming out of this down the line.

I like that..Good one.
I tried to NOT like this show and it hooked after the 3rd Episode with the Gender Reassignment issue..very Star Trek-like...controversial and thought provoking.

It's very much Star Trek in how they approach new cultures and civilizations.
Also(and this will be controversial) Alara > T'Pol

Alara is much hotter than T'Pol.
Jolene Blalock (T'Pol) is not that attractive by Hollywood standards.

I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating Cheetos!

the orville is good. it's star trek fan fiction and pays homage without blatantly crossing the line of ripping off
it can handle topical issues without being heavy handed and more often than not can show it from more than one perspective
there's one episode that's clearly a negative commentary on the 2016 election but it's not explicit or ham fisted. it's a good episode with an opening that has some x files flair to it.
love the orville. seth macfarlane has a good grasp of why things he grew up with were popular and worked. you can rip off concepts or imagery and when you miss out on the nuts and bolts of it, it's obvious to everyone it's a cheap rip off
i'm impressed, partially because my expectations were pretty fricking low though

I didn’t take it so much as against the election. But more towards the current state of affairs with social media news reporting and herd mentality. It was done so well that different people get different meanings from it.

I've never been a fan of Star Trek, but I tend to find Seth MacFarland amusing for the most part so I figured I'd give it a shot.
I chuckle every now and then, and it seems like the kind of show that will get funnier as they hit their stride down the road.

quote:good point. it was one of my favorite episodes. but what I'm really pointing out is it is one sided but not preachy or ham fisted

clearly the remark is made: this is bad
whereas the gender bender episode has a 2 sided take on things
I also like that the ending isn't always wrapped in a neat bow. they change the baby into a dude...oh frick, not the ending you were expecting. did she cheat on him or was she under the influence of rob lowe's date rape pheromones? is that rape?
it's just not black and white, that one sticks out because it was but I like the way they did it. good episode even if it has commentary I don't like because it's not adversarial by being judgmental.

Im really glad I gave this show a shot.
It started kind of slow and now it's must watch TV for me. I love it.

I could deal with it being about 10% funnier. It's like right on the line, but there are times that beg for a truly funny time.
I still watch it though.

I am shocked at how much I actually enjoy this show. It hits alot of things that are relevant in life today but they actually handle the story in a very non-McFarlane way...which is weird, but good.

The last half of the season is sitting on my DVR. I'll get to it eventually. It didn't draw me in like Discovery did.
Posted on 12/8/17 at 1:32 am to Fewer Kilometers
The season finale was something that even Star Trek never did...a planet that rotates between two universes, but time passes differently on each side.

I've mentioned this in the other thread but I think it is the best show on network TV right now. It is a show that kicked off slow but really hit it's stride by episode 3 and haven't let up. Episode one was tetering on being bad but it looks like it was mostly a character introduction episode so I gave it a pass.
