WTF? It’s a Stanley Kubrick triumph…

I mean how is it my fault? I’ve never seen the tv movie, ever. Just repeating what was said. Much better production to the source material

The Kubrick version had zero character depth. Danny was a blob, Jack was just a complete psycho from the start, and Wendy was a wet blanket

The book characters were deep as the Grand Canyon. All of them.

Cause he is abusive alcoholic prior to taking the job.

Sobriety, work and the isolation of the hotel sends him further down a psychic path

Right. And in the book you see how layered he is. He is a real person. A good father. Trying to battle his demons

None of that comes through with Nicholson’s performance

Kinda hard to depict that on screen cause he has already terrorized his family

My take is that king doesn’t like the mirror of himself the movie gives

True, fair point. But I feel the right actor could have shown those internal battles. Nicholson is just so good at crazy and he just leaned all in on it and chewed the scenes

He is relatively normal thru a lot of movie

The movie is more thru kids POV, who is rightfully terrified of his dad

Anyway I need to get dressed for the fish and goose soirée

Another reason the book was so good. Danny was not only unafraid of his dad, he was attached as hell to him.

I remember reading that King hated the movie and was involved in a television adaptation that was true to the novel. Then i saw the television version and realized the book was yet another example of King rambling and failing to nail the landing with a weird, thrown together ending. The movie is brilliant. The documentary Room 237 is a pretty interesting, if far-fetched exploration of the symbolism in the movie.

A lot of kings books ending sucks. This one didn’t feel like one to me

Even at the very end Jack was still there. Still inside fighting to escape. When he told Danny “please Danny run, get out” it was perfect at the end as his last effort to beat the demons

I think the ending to the book is actually pretty perfect. What did you think was weird or thrown together?

The reason why King hates the movie is because Stanley Kubrick took his story and made it better and more iconic. That’s all there is to it. Ask anyone on the street about The Shining and it’ll be about Kubrick’s version.

What was iconic about the movie? It’s just a crazy man trying to kill people. There is no depth or anything. The damn hotel isn’t really that magical because Jack was 3 ways to insane before getting there it appeared

Scariest movie I saw as a kid.

Saw it a few years ago and man, it was laughingly bad to me.

I was at the Stanley a few months ago. They really push the "haunting" thing. There were three axes used in the movie Scat man's death, the bathroom, and the maze. They had two of them and the third was bought for hundreds of thousands and was left on their door step with auction receipt and appraisal, buyer unknown. They do have a maze but it's about chest high.
