I thought the wife was great in the film. She reminds me of all my relationships I have in my head.

Chasing instant gratification is how you end up in the Texas Bowl. Champions put in the work. Turn the lights and your phone off, sit down, and watch two hours and fifty minutes of Heat the way Michael Mann intended it. Then come back here and post your “criticisms.”

Your assessment of the Neal/Edie romance being important for the plot is spot on except for one important detail. It wasn’t the romance that undid him, it was the lust for revenge against Waingro (sp?). Him and Edie are free and clear if he just keeps driving.

Yeah, this. The romance angle had nothing to do with it really, except to show that he was willing to walk away from even her because the heat was around the corner. And in the ultimate moment he was able to choose his principles and turn his back on her. That was the entire point to that IIRC.

His achilles heel in the end was the revenge on Waingro. That's what did him in.

I absolutely love Heat. But I will agree with OP that it is definitely too long. I mean, it's an almost 3 hour movie (2:50) that could have EASILY been just over 2+. They could've cut 30-40 minutes from it without skipping a beat. If I am remembering the pacing correctly, there's a solid hour+ of movie left AFTER the bank heist scene. That's too much IMO. Even though it's still a good movie after that, it doesn't mean it doesn't drag out for too long.

But the bank heist scene remains to this day the absolute best thing to watch in surround sound for me. Just incredibly done all around. That shite gets me hyped the frick up, and Val Kilmer goes bananas.

because they're real guns with blanks it's possibly the best sound in a movie ever.

also the bank robbery scene is actually used to teach tactical reloading Mann went above and beyond to make sure everything was technically accurate.

Val Kilmer, Robert De Niro, and Tom Sizemore received three months of training from former British SAS (Special Air Service) members, including Andy McNab and Mick Gould.

Kilmer’s proficiency in reloading his Colt Model 733 carbine is so precise that footage of it has reportedly been shown to US Marine recruits at MCRD San Diego and at Fort Bragg to demonstrate proper reload techniques and movement under fire.

Director Michael Mann aimed for extreme realism, using live fire with blanks during rehearsals and recording the actual sounds of gunfire echoing off downtown Los Angeles buildings rather than using sound effects in post-production.

The scene was so realistic that it has been used by the LAPD for training its SWAT units.

The sequel/prequel although a little late, should have been made 10 yrs ago looks to have a stellar class of A list actors.

I've read the book the prequel will be solid gold w/ the early Chicago years and this Otis Wardell character that Hanna is locked in to take down. Not sure how the sequel when Chris gets out of LA and heads to South America, that part kinda slowed some in the book.!

I would guess you know, the origin of Heat was as a pilot that wasn’t picked up and turned into a TV movie LA Takedown. I think it’s obvious there are some storylines, (Hanna’s step daughter, Waingro the serial killer) that would have been explored in future episodes. Would definitely be a good candidate for a 10 episode streaming series.
ETA: looks like i mentioned this in the original thread

Stayed in downtown LA for the LSU-UCLA game in 2021, our hotel was right across the street from the bank and the shoot out was filmed in the streets near by.

I've read the book twice now and i love it. godfather 2 style.

this will have an A list cast with Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Austin Butler, Adam Driver, Ana de Armas, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Allen White, and Channing Tatum all rumored to be a part of it.

This is true, but it doesn't make the execution any less ridiculous. They hook up once, he doesn't call her back for a while, but when he does he asks her to go away to New Zealand with him?

Her: (paraphrasing) "You don't know anything about me."
Him: "I know enough."

This woman wasn't enough to catch your attention after consistently patronizing her shop, but now she's everything you ever wanted after getting your dick wet once? Then on her end, she agrees to go away, eventually realizes he's a killer, then still leaves with him? GTFO.

I feel you. Its the least believable subplot in movies like this: straight laced, sweet, seemingly intelligent, pretty woman falls for bad boy who is balls deep in felonious, violent crime. It was my least favorite part about The Town as well.

Didn't know that, that's pretty cool. To this day, nothing has audibly impressed me as much as seeing Heat in the theater that day. I remember me and my buddy loving the movie and then the bank robbery scene comes on. Once it was finished we just looked at each other mouth agape saying "that was awesome!"

That was taught long before the movie was made.

But the movie really perfected it for mainstream civilians.
