Or get social and go watch with friends or at a local bar. It's what I do.
I think Roku must be better than Appletv. I was at a friend's house that had appletv and he couldn't watch any episodes of the wire with it, even trying to use airplay with his iphone and HBO go app. I don't think appletv has HBO GO, which seems weird to me if iphones and ipads have it.

i watched a review of apple tv on youtube and the guy was saying appletv was more for showing home videos and pictures... and roku is more for media

I did the same thing to a certain extent. I signed up for Dish network and did a cheap package with them but rather than pay an extra ~$20 a month for 2 receivers I chose to buy the cheap $50 roku boxes and put them in to my bedroom and office. I wanted to be able to keep all my gaming systems down stairs on the big tv and the place where they would get the most use, instead of spreading them throughout the house. I love my roku boxes and if I feel like watching some local channels, I have a cable hooked to the TV's. With having cable internet, you pretty much get basic cable with no problems, I get all the local channels in HD and don't have any sort of antenna hooked up or anything.

Can this Roku box replace my Cox DVR that I pay a monthly fee for? Does it record shows? Maybe its not what I'm thinking.

I'm wondering whether to get this or a PS3 and have it for video games as well

Ok I'm starting to get the gist of this thing. Basically, you ditch the cable and just keep internet, then stream shows/movies through the Roku with whatever services you subsrcibe to (hulu, netflix, etc), right?
What about live sports on ESPN or shows on the major 4 networks, are you not able to do that anymore? I understand that with the huluplus you can watch them (network shows) the next day, but can you watch anything on there live?

No you can't use this as a dvr

you can't watch those on here either, there is no "live" tv. However you can run a cable (if you have cable tv) straight to the TV to pick up local channels or get an HD antenna to help out to receive local channels. ESPN would probably not be included in that, but for me personally that's why I have a cheap dish subscription (like $35) that lets me watch sports + things the wife wants to watch.

If you get an appletv and jailbreak it, you can watch any tv show you want no matter what network. New episodes updated every night for current shows. Also has movies.
No subscription needed.
I keep my netflix subscription so I can watch on my phone when I'm away from home.

you can link your amazon account to the roku as well. the wife and I have amazon prime. so we can watch the 'free' shows and/or easily rent a movie/tv show like pay per view also.

I do this, but the only problem is when you lose a stream, you have to start over, and the fast forward sucks.
Still pretty sweet though.

I'd do something similar, but I have a feeling I'd get a phone call every time I went somewhere asking me how to do something.
I live next to my parents so my next choice is to bury a cable from their house and get them to get another box, and then add a wireless booster to their home. Would save me roughly $150/month.
