I hope either IMDB is wrong or Simon just messed with us
Seriously people I think there is a 3rd scenario other than suicide and piss arse drunk. I think some health related (ie heart attack) could have also happened on the ferry and his family just hasn't been notified yet. With his size and poor diet, this seems like a "real possibilty" other than the obvious suicide angle.

Awesome, this sets up perfectly for another season long missing person search next season! Just like that black guy they were looking for all season!

I doubt it. I think he will either be dead next episode or he will show up after a several days long bender.
Or his wife will get a call from a hospital where he has been unconscious since the muggers beat the hell out of him.
Either way, for the first time all season, they have made me somewhat interested to see the next episode.

Agreed. I do like the show bc of the "local stuff" but it is nice to actually have some sort of cliff hanger...

Not really. Just trying to come up with alternatives if there are any.
He probably is dead and IMDB just has him listed for season 2 in error because every single sign sure points to suicide.
On the other hand, his last waltz through the city may have taught him that things were simply not as bad as he thought they were.
So maybe we still need alternatives as to why the car was still there.

This is fun actually having a discussion about what "might" happen next on Treme...

Yup. I also notice that SFP hasn't posted his usual vitriol so maybe even he was able to stomach this episode. Although, he probably just hasn't watched it yet.

Its funny how Goodman's character is the one I dislike the most on the show; however, his character is also probably the most realistic NO character (Uptown Snob)...

Especially considering that it's probably the most hated show on the board

Drowning victims often have trouble starting and driving automobiles.

Are you unable to read? Do you need the definition of alternatives?
Since we did not see him jump, there could be other alternatives.
Every person here agrees it certainly looks like a suicide.
But as I stated, maybe his waltz around the city made him change his mind, thus there could be an alternative to suicide. Unlikely? Yes. Possible? Yes.

Hmmmm, I don't think so. What's yours?

For those with the "Mugging" theory, I think you all have watched the diner scene at the end of the Sopranos too many times (studying everyone in there and their emotions and locations)...
Would you really mug someone on a ferry? Since 9/11 and the film "Deja Vu", security on the Algiers ferry is extremely tight. There is always a uniformed police officer on board. If you mug someone, then you have to wait 25 minutes for the ferry to dock without anyone noticing.
If you are a professional criminal, wouldn't you also prefer to not mug a 6'4 300lb guy in daylight on a small boat? Wouldn't you wait for night time and mug all the Davises of the world, as they stumble around the Treme drunk?
I think we were set-up with the interaction with the character on the ferry - so they could then give the viewers his perception, with the camera, of all the sudden Goodman not standing there.
The other character was used to illustrate that there was no one else in sight. Because if someone would have seen him jump or hop the rail, they would have immediately jumped in.
At this point, I hope he doesn't survive a suicide attempt or is found to still be alive. Because we will still get an uneasy feeling everytime that he is alone. The series is much more powerful with him dead and to have a few new characters woven in next season. That is what was great about the Wire.
The cut away was well done because we don't dwell on the details of how he did it and if it was a believable way for one to kill himself - we continue to focus on what he went through and how it effected everyone.
Random Prediction for Next Week: Darius, the young buck helping Detective Freamon with his Indian suit, gets caught up in some kind of cross fire or beating during St. Joseph's. They focused on him too much in episode 9 for there not to be some movement in his story. Or maybe they surprise him with his own indian suit and it's a potentially troubled teen gone good story.

According to IMDB all of the characters are signed up for 20 episodes, so unless they are going to pay goodman for the 20 and not use him, he will be back.
FWIW, i though he offed himself, but he could have just went to the other side of the boat. I wouldn't be surprised due to the lack of story this show has exhibited. Here's hoping that the show gets better.

That's this afternoon. This morning I'm saving a 120 year old dilapidated, falling down shotgun from having the wrong color paint being put on it.
