John C. Reilly told Leonardo DiCaprio to turn down Titanic and do Boogie Nights instead

In hindsight this looks like bad advice, but in the moment Titanic was a big risk that could have been a career killer for all the people who starred in it. Look at what happened to Kevin Costner's career after Waterworld and The Postman. While he eventually rebounded on television, his film career hasn't been in the same ever since.

Kevin Costner did quite well after those movies, and not just with TV

I thought putting a nobody juvenile like LDC in Titanic was an insane casting mistake

I was thinking the old way, where you cast an aging leading man who is known for a franchise (Ford, Connery) to bring in the international audience.

But Leo brought in the teenage girls who went back to see their dreamboat over and over and over...

In one respect at least, Cameron is indeed a genius

He wouldn’t have froze to death in the icy water if he would’ve chose Boogie Nights.

Despite his acting chops, I don't think I could buy young Leo as a 70s porn star. Too much modern teen idol pretty boy and not enough scumbag. Marky Mark had those rough edges to work with.

A guy like Thomas Jane could just grow out a bristly moustache, put on pants that were two sizes two small and talk like the a-hole neighbor he grew up next to and ...boom... there it is. Leo would have the glowing halo of Romeo and Juliette following him around.

Gilbert Grape was a critical success and LDC got an Oscar nomination for it. Romeo + Juliet made $147m at the box office. I feel like even if he wasn't an A-lister he was absolutely already something of a teen heartthrob when Titanic came out. Both those movies were very popular with early 80s kids and of course that was the same audience that propelled Titanic to $600m.

Heck, if anything I think Winslet was the riskier choice. I knew who LDC was before Titanic came out but I'd never seen or heard of Winslet. (I would've been 11 when Titanic came out, for reference.)

How would Titanic be a career killer? It’s based on a real story. Sure, it could have been a dud, but the real story is interesting and people were going to see it regardless.

Yeah Leo was far from a nobody. He was 100% carefully cast knowing he would sell tickets.

You don’t know that.

Costner is an over rated actor. Not once has anyone ever said oh wow Costner would have been perfect for this role! He just loudspeaks every line he has ever said on screen.

I like a lot of movies he is in... but he could have been replaced with a number of people and half of them might have made the movie better.

he was far from a major star, the kind seemingly needed for a $200M epic

that was not at all an established strategy at the time

the conventional wisdom would have cast an international name as the star and someone like LDC as the second lead

Well to be fair nobody ever accused John C. Reilly of being a genius.

That’s the point though. He was always a star. The execs knew it. Cameron knew it. My 14 year old sister and all her friends sure as hell knew it. It was obvious.
