Although, it did give us this gem.
Around 2:35 it gets good.

NBC screwed up with Leno as well. Leno wanted to leave the network and go to ABC but the NBC execs didn't want to lose Leno either so they gave him his own variety show in primetime, completely disregarding the fact that variety shows ALWAYS fail in primetime.
I agree. Many try to pick a side and villainize the other host but I stay away from all of that. NBC has been screwing up for many years now(except for Chuck) and the Leno/Conan debacle was one of the big one's.

He was only retirement cold feet leading to him signing a non-Tonight Show contract that led to all this.
He backed out of retirement, yes, but it was the fear of Leno going to a rival network that caused NBC to work out a variety show deal with Leno. NBC realized too little too late that there wasn't enough room for both Conan and Leno. One of them had to go. In the end, it was NBC who screwed Conan, not Leno.

I agree with that somewhat.
NBC mismanaged the situation.
Leno could have refused to displace Conan/The tonight show timeslot though.

They would have just gotten someone else. And besides, Leno had his employees to think about as well. His variety show was failing, if he refused the Tonight Show gig his employees would have been left unemployed in the middle of a recession. He also probably wanted the job back.

So what if he had the job for 16 years? Carson had that gig for 30 years before he retired.
Carson did not have a "Late Night" show following him for 16 years which did consistently well in the ratings.

But Conan O'Brien wanted the top job and threatened to compete with Leno on another network if he didn't get it. No...that's not morally wrong at all.
After 16 years in the 12:30pm slot I don't blame him for wanting to move up. In prime time you get more TV viewers, better guests, etc. So he was going to make the jump to ABC, but to prevent this NBC promised him Leno's chair. I would argue that NBC stabbed Leno in the back, not Conan. But, that's just like, my opinion, man.
Eta: Well he had Letterman following him starting in '82, however alot of people thought Carson was going to retire in '87.

Any of you ancient history majors remember how Leno stabbed Letterman in the back?

The problem was having both personalities on contract.
Why would they "just have gotten someone else?"
And the other comments are just assinine.

And he shouldn't IMO. Leno isn't perfect but I think he's pretty good. He gets a lot of hate and I know a lot of people think he's an a-hole but he does a good job
Good job at what? Stealing other peoples new jokes and recycling his old ones?

If this happens, Leno goes to Fox and NBC looses what few viewers they have left after Kimmel and Letterman.
