The best movie ever made IMO

Probably not, but it's my favorite and certainly up there. My parents went on vacation that summer to Pensacola as newlyweds--I wasn't born yet--and went to see Jaws in the theater one of the 1st days they were there. They went to the beach either later that day or the next and then the subsequent few days they were there. Said literally zero people got in the water the whole time they were there.

Crazy the widespread societal impact that film had. And still does. I'm in my 40s and still don't love being in the water. Hell, I grew up on the river and near a lake, and we went skiing/tubing dozens of times every summer. And I always hated after I fell/let go bobbing up and down in that murky water waiting for the boat to circle back and pick me up. I mean, it was freshwater in NLA. There were definitely no sharks. But Jaws had already trained my brain to be scared in the middle of the water--ANY water--by myself when I couldn't see,

My favorite movie of all time. Actually went to a science academy magnet school for a year because I wanted to be a marine biologist when I was a kid.
Got to meet Susan Backlinie (Chrissy) a few years ago at a Horror Con. So sweet and enjoyed talking to a dorky ole fan. Really hoping to go to the 50th Anniversary JAWS fest up in Martha's Vineyard next year.

Got to see it on the big screen for the first time during covid when they were opening up old drive ins. Drove to Vegas to watch a double feature of JAWS and JAWS2, was amazing. If you ever get a chance to see it in a drive thru, do it, as it takes it to a whole 'nother level.

Murray Hamilton is so great as Mayor Vaughn. He has to be one of the best a-hole character actors of all time.

He's more concerned with the vandalism of the sign than he is about protecting people. So perfect for the role. He looks natural in that 1970's Land's End nautical sport coat.

The casting of Jaws was great.

Absolutely. I've told this story before, but I was a kid and swimming in a family friend's pool one night. And at one point I was in there alone and in the back of my head I had an eerie and almost uncomfortable feeling because of Jaws. And I was in a swimming pool in a yard.

If you ever get the chance to visit Martha’s Vinyard, make it a point to go to as many of the filming locations as you can. Its pretty cool seeing those places that really haven’t changed that much since filming

I did the Universal Studios tour three times in the 80s as a kid and you knew the shark was coming and each time, it got everyone on the tram to jump.

Jaws really affected the public psyche about open water.

Like what Psycho did for Motel showers.

Murray Hamilton outfits were a highlight of that movie. The two blazers in these embeds are sweet. Funny how it took a mechanical shark constantly malfunctioning to make this such a great movie. Spielberg's original vision of constantly showing the shark would have ruined it as that shark was kind of fake looking. When it chomps down on the air tank you can see its rubber teeth bend. I was too young to see it in the theater but i still remember my nightmares from the night i watched it on tv.

This movie scared me so bad I didn't want to swim in a swimming pool after dark or take a bath!!!!! I was sub teen when it came out but still, terrified me.

This movie and "It's Alive", goodness that movie is the only movie that made me go to the lobby.

Everything about this scene is outstanding. The music is great, the way the scene builds, the tension, the shots of Brodie, it's all so good.

^^ and the opening scene is still one of the most terrifying bits of cinema

The same actress was in the opening of 1941 where they aped Jaws but with a Japanese sub.

Jaws is probably as close as you can get to having a “perfect movie”.

No scene is wasted.

An all time movie regardless of genre.

I haven't read the book but I've been told there was a whole side plot where the Mafia has a bunch of business on the Island and the mayor is bribed/dirty/threatened, that's his motive for being so obtuse about the problem- not because he's evil or stupid, just compromised. Almost a sympathetic character. That's just what I read from others who have read the book.

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down to the pond and chasing bluegills and tommycocks. This shark, swallow you whole. No shakin', no tenderizin', down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.
