Not even bullshitting. I think this is legit his best scene on film.

He plays it like Shakespeare or a Biblical epic. That's why the film works so well. Nothing was a joke. Nothing was tongue in cheek. It was all serious and played that way... As an epic.

I had a professor who went to school with him at the University of Michigan and he said he was a great actor then as well.

First time I saw the scene it was with Denzel Washington in the 2016 movie. Now that I’ve seen it with JEJ, I can’t think of an actor other than Denzel that could have put it together as good as him.

Your son askes you why you don't like him and you basically tell him no i don't like you but i give you food, clothes and a roof b/c i have to. I was waiting for the part where he would say i love you, but that didn't happen. frick that dad.

Then you dont get the entire message of the movie.

Troy is projecting his own failures/worries/demons/struggles onto his so. He says he doesn't like his son but in the process he reflects on his responsibilities as a man and his own failures as an athlete and his criminal past and the resentment he feels toward his son (not achieving his dreams but his son has the potential to do so) and the relationship he had with his own father. It's never about one thing when the writing is good.

I didn't say the writing wasn't good.
I said he's a shitty father.
Both can be true.
There's no explanation or further reading to know that in that scene he was a terrible father.

Troy tries in his own way to be a good father..he provides for his family..he fears his son will experience racism and tries to protect him from that..the fence itself partially represents his desire to protect his family and toward the end of the play his mistress dies during child birth and he takes responsibility of raising the child

That doesn't take away from the emotional damage he does to his son, but you can be a good father and a shitty father.
