Television has lost one its biggest comedy names — James Burrows, the most decorated multi-camera director in the history of the medium, passed away in his sleep this morning, June 19, after a brief illness. He was 85.
His 50+-year career will remain unmatched — both in longevity and influence as he played a crucial role in some of television’s biggest hits, including Cheers, which he also co-created, Taxi, Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory.
quote:
Burrows began his career with The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1974, going on to direct a slew of episodes of comedy shows such as The Bob Newhart Show and Laverne & Shirley.
He went on set the tone and help assemble the cast of some of the biggest series of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s by directing the pilots of Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and The Big Bang Theory.
Burrows directed 246 episodes of Will & Grace (including the revival), 236 episode of Cheers, 75 episodes of Taxi, 49 episodes of Mike & Molly, 36 episodes of Frasier (including the revival) and 15 episodes of Friends. Burrows served as executive producer on Cheers, Will & Grace and Mike & Molly, among many others.

The man was the GOAT in his field. Respect.

Frasier and Cheers are my GOAT proper sitcoms, with a slight edge to Frasier. Some of the other creators of those shows were on one of the 9/11 planes, so probably none are still with us.

He is credited as a co-creator of Cheers, even though it was probably one of those deals (like Hogan's Heroes w/Al Ruddy) where the creators added his name in hopes of selling the pilot.
There is also a directors guild rule that the pilot director gets 2% ownership of the series, even if he did nothing else. So add that to his points in the show.
The late Sam Simon was an early producer. He later co-created The Simpsons. The year after it premiered he divorced Jennifer Tilly -- she got 30% of his share in the show as part of the settlement.
She has a nice rack, but it ain't worth no 30%

He definitely contributed to entertaining millions of people on a weekly basis.
Coincidentally, I think I’m slowly morphing into James Burrows.

Celebritynetworth has him at $600 million.

Nice resume. Rip

According to Hollywood legend, Jimmy Burrows makes $100 a minute, every minute of the day, from residuals alone. If that's true, and it might just be a legend, it would work out to $144,000 a day… $50 million a year. Seems insane and too amazing to be true. But he is certainly one of the most successful people in Hollywood history.
Nice resume. Rip
