i'm going to have to disagree with an intentional socialist message.

it's a feel good and christmas is all about the giving spirit. i just don't think it's any more complex than that.. plus this was so way back.

Frank Capra was no socialist. Despite being born in Sicily he identified -- as least publicly -- with old-fashioned Midwestern populist-conservatism.

IAWL can more accurately viewed as a cultural statement rather than an economic one, with Potter representing the evil influence of big cites on idyllic small towns -- illustrated, obviously, by the alternate-reality Pottersville.

and this.

I honestly think some of the kids on here have no sense of proportion or history. Or, for that matter, economic reality.

Who gives a shite what wiki is

You can take the movie however you want, but I feel like if you finish watching it(as I just did) and your conclusion that it's evil socialist propaganda then you're probably a very miserable person.

Baloo had some great comments in my thread about this from 2009:

quote:

Capra was anti-communist socialist. A lot of his movies are what I would call "American socialism". It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Mr. Deeds, Meet John Doe... all incredibly patriotic yet socialist movies. Capra was a proud American who believed in the "common man" and hated those who tried to exploit the average American.

I love It's a Wonderful Life and the way it promotes small town America, but let's be honest, Mr. Potter's America won. And honestly, I'd rather live in Pottersville than Bedford Falls. Capra is championing a vision of America that died a long time ago.

quote:

I don't believe socialism is positive or negative. I also understand that socialism has a long history of anti-communism, and that the two things are different. It's like saying all federal governments are communist like the Soviet Union was.

Capra had a strong socialist bent. He was also an extreme American patriot. But we are way off on a tangent here, I'm just trying to say I wasn't using "socialist" as a pejorative.

i don't really like movies of that ilk, so i don't have strong emotions about that one, one way or another

Since I'm being quoted, here's something else I wrote in that thread:

quote:

Anyway, Potter does not represent capitalism, he represents GREED. Greed is bad. That goes back to the Bible. Hell, George Bailey is a capitalist. Sam Wainwright is a successful capitalist, and neither is condemned by the movie. To view the movie as a condemnation of capital ignores, well, almost the entire movie. It condemns putting money before people. Despite what Ayn Rand says, failing to care about your fellow man is not a virtue. In fact, that makes you a sociopath by definition.

Sure, it's an aria to the working man. Honestly, we could use a few more these days. He's a socialist in the Thomas More sense.

Like Chesterton, Belloc, and de Valera, Capra was a distributist.

Huh?

I'm not sure of the exact point of your question, but anyone, on this board or managing a bait stand in South Carolina, who points to "It's a Wonderful Life" as some sort of socialist propaganda piece is fricking cuckoo.

That skull paper weight/lighter on Potter's desk is bad arse.

There are some extremely NSFW Donna Reed pics on the interweb. I won't link to avoid a ban, but if your Google is strong, you can find them.
