Hanks has had a couple of solid roles, but I wouldn't consider him one of the greats. Forrest Gump wasn't a "great" acting job. It's not that hard to play a fricking idiot...

he had an outstanding run for about 8-10 years or so from roughly 1993-2001ish, but hasn't really been great ever since. he's definitely one of the best considering the handful of big hits that he did have in a short period of time, but overall I wouldn't rank him that high.

Agree 100%...people forget that for years, he was really a small-time actor, reason to even doubt him being a decent actor before he finally had a big 'hit' and suddendly everyone raved about him. He is now falling back into the pack again, so no, he is not one of the greatest...

Role selection is one of the most important factors in their legacy and Hanks has chosen great ones.

Like I've said he is a GREAT movie star but just an above average actor, not great but serviceable and obviously possesses the talent to carry films

He isn't falling back to pack, he hasn't made many movies. Instead he has focused on the other side of the camera

I like Tom Hanks a lot as an actor. His Oscars Philadelphia and Forest Gump were well deserved but to be honest he was a bit fortunate to have won 2 Oscars having only been nominated 5 times. Compare that for instance to Meryl Streep who has been nominated 17 times and Peter O'Toole who was nominated 8 times and never won. I would have to do a thoughtful list but I'm not sure Hanks would make my top 10.

I always thought it was pretty well accepted that Hanks is a great actor. He's been great in so many good movies and he's shown range. From Big to Castaway to Charlie Wilson's War.

Everyone else had reasons for saying why not. What say you? I am on the side of he's possibly the first one out of the top tier of greatest actors. Like Freauxzen said, he had a great stretch in the late 80s and 90s, but there isn't as much greatness to work with as some of the guys we consider the best. He likes being a producer and sometimes a director. Ain't nothing wrong wit dat.

People will talk of him in 100 years. Like Chapman.
to me he is the modern day equivalent of jimmy stewart. he has this everyman quality to him that everyone can relate to which is why he doesn't necessarily have to 'lose himself in a role'. similar to what Freaux said.

going through a list a jimmy stewarts biggest films i can easily see hanks sliding into the role and delivering the same effect as stewart.

Yup. He is no higher than 15th. Who would I rank over him?

Heston
Brandon
Pacino
De Niro
Claude Raines
Olivier
Gable
Stewart
John Wayne
Clint Eastwood
Peter O Toole
Alec Guinness
Richard Burton
Charles Laughton
Kirk Douglas
Burt Lancaster
Mel Gibson
Gregory Peck

Now do you really rank Tom Hanks over those guys?

I'd definitely rank Tom Hanks above Mel Gibson.

I'd rate him above -

Heston
Claude Raines
Gable
John Wayne
Clint Eastwood
Richard Burton
Charles Laughton
Kirk Douglas
Mel Gibson

As stated earlier, he is modern day version of Stewart.

I think he's better than Pzcino and John Wayne honestly.

He's a better actor than John Wayne most definitely. John Wayne could not act real well at all. Tom Hanks' performance in Philadelphia trumps any performance the Duke ever put on in a motion picture.

Hanks definitely stacks up to these guys and is better than most on this list IMO.

The argument is subjective so its pointless to debate who's better so why go on?

Worth mentioning his work in animated films too. Toy Story and Polar Express were monster hits.

Not even close. I'd probably say he's better than Wayne, that's about it. Problem is, that list is missing at least another 20-30 actors who are more talented and better at acting than Hanks.

Now Top Movie Stars all-time? He's probably top 10.

It's subjective if you want it to be. It's fairly clear that Marlon Brando is a better actor than Marlon Wayans. Just because you can't pinpoint why, yet, doesn't mean there isn't an objective evaluation happening. (Side Note: When Marlon Wayans wants to put on a good performance, he can, he just doesn't do it often. Used for Name parallel only).

Definitely agree. I don't know how anyone could not consider Hanks to be great after Philadelphia, Castaway, and he was even awesome as a has-been alcoholic baseball manager in League of their Own.
