Is The Terminator a slasher?

Just with a gun instead of a knife? May sound silly however It plays like one.
The Terminator is the stalking killer like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, Sarah Connor was the final girl that the killer is after as well.
The vibe of the movie is dark and scary with a synth score like your typical 80s slasher of the time.
James Cameron has stated on the record he was inspired by Halloween and how John Carpenter & Debra Hill made a hit movie with such a small budget.
The rest of the franchise starting with T2 is obviously blockbuster Action, but I think that first movie is kinda of a low budget slasher movie but with a sci-fi twist to it. I also love the dark cinematography of LA at night.

Yes, the first movie is indeed a sci-fi slasher flick. And a damned good one, too.

I always thought the first was really more akin to a horror movie that’s set within the realm of a sci fi storyline. Kind of like Alien. You even had the stereotypical jump scare at the end with the arm trying to get Sarah after the Terminator got crushed.

The first one is definitely more of a horror film than any other genre. Not sure if it's technically a "slasher" but it shares some of that DNA.

It doesn't really line up, though. You wouldn't have that club scene. The whole industrial nature of the ending.

It has some slasher elements but the predominant motif is action adventure - car chases, explosions, multiple shootouts, cops, catchy dialogue, the villain getting his just deserts in dramatic fashion.

Yup. People forget due to the buddy action adventure of T2, but T1 was indeed a scifi slasher film
