I love this movie so much. It isn’t Manns best movie, but it is great mid-00s fun

Gem. The scene when they get news of Trudy? Held captive is good. Great score

I like it, it has some incredible shots and scenes. The boat to Havana is beautiful and epic but it’s missing the glitz of the series. Mann was in his gritty realism period and it didn’t have the contemporary coolness, pop culture aspect that’s synonymous with Miami Vice. You see some people calling it hollow, that’s why. If he had added 80s music or some underground pop music of the era it would’ve felt more like Miami Vice.

The glitz, contemporary coolness, and pop culture of the series isn't something that could have been duplicated in a movie. Different time and place, lightning in a bottle, etc. A retro movie wouldn't have worked and trying to bring the series vibe into 2006 I don't think would have worked either.

I think if you improve on the soundtrack and add some nightlife/cultural elements it gives the movie a much different and more recognizable feel.

I’ve always loved it

I like it too it just doesn’t have the same feel as the series and I think that turned some fans of the series away from it

I grew up watching the series. It's my favorite tv show of all time. The movie was never going to be like the series. It would be like trying to replicate the '80s. That's an impossibility. Almost all of the movies based on '80s tv shows have been done as camp. Starsky & Hutch, 21 Jump Street, Dukes of Hazzard, ChiPs, etc. They're just ok, at best. Miami Vice as a movie worked because it was the series as an updated, modern crime story with a ton of callbacks to episodes from the series.
The other '80s tv show where I liked the movie a lot was The Fall Guy.

I'm of the opinion that all of Mann' s shite is a beautiful mess

Big fan of the series as well, I still watch it today from time to time. You were also a fan so you know there are discrepancies in the series as well. The 2 part pilot “brothers keeper” is different than the episodic tone of most of the series. The first 2 seasons are very different from the following seasons. We used to joke that the longer Sonny’s hair got the worse the show became. So to say that the original series was one specific thing is incorrect, it became campy and more light as it went along. What I’m talking about is that the city of Miami was a character in the original series. It wasn’t in the movie. To me the quintessential Miami Vice scene is when Tubbs meets Calderon at the club in “Brothers Keeper”. The tension in the scene, nobody knows who’s who or what’s going to happen, with the Miami night life and “All Night Long” cover playing in the background is the show in a nutshell.

there’s a director’s cut version out there
The Director's Cut is worth the watch.

Im giving it a watch. Never watched. But immedietly, Collin Ferral, trying to look like John Voight from Heat doesnt really work.
John Voight in Heat was great. He could have played and carreid this role better than Collin Ferral.

A mess but a very enjoyable mess. Especially the directors cut.

I cant stomach the film all the way through. I had to watch in installments.
I wish Michael Bay directed it, I felt it would have been better.
I liked the way it was shot, but the editing felt really choppy and acting just didnt deliever the script the way it was written.
Thats my view.
