Call it sad, call it funny, but it's better than even money that Guys and Dolls takes the title.

No mention of Fiddler?

I do think that Les Miserables is the best but Phantom, Fiddler, and maybe even Oklahoma deserve to be named.

Hands down. It's not my favorite of all time but I think it's objectively the best. It's amazing. It was the first live play I saw as a kid at the Saenger Theater. I was blown away.

Am I the only Wicked fan here?

Les Mis is the gold standard in its sheer scope, musicality, and emotional impact. They some don't make them like this anymore.

However, it owes it's position to the Rodgers and Hammerstein classics along with West Side Story...

Phantom is a close #2.

GOAT

it's #1 by a wide margin.

It's also the most successful venture in entertainment history.

Phanton of the Opera was the one that got me into musicals.

But if we are including movies; Blues Brothers is the gold standard all others should be judged.

Wizard of Oz

Obviously this - and Grease could be said to be the most popular because they were huge hits on TV.

Wizard was named the most-viewed motion picture on television syndication by the Library of Congress...and was the first film chosen to be preserved by the Smithsonian in 1991.

On Broadway...the top grossing musicals were...

1. Phantom
2. Cats

I would definitely pick Les Miserables. I have seen a handful of others including Phantom of the Opera and My Fair Lady, but none came all that close to me.

It does have the GOAT song IMO.

These are all good, candy/pop entertainment. Les Mis is about suffering and selflessness and sacrifice and the soul and grace and penance and redemption and all the things it means to really be a human being.

I think so. So many good songs.

The Book of Mormon is right there, though.

There are at least three songs from Phantom of the Opera that are better than I Dreamed a Dream IMO.

The Phantom of the Opera
Music of the Night
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again

I might even take Past the Point of No Return over it as well.

ABC Cafe/Red & Black

Do You Hear The People Sing

The Music of the Night is a classic, but in totality, I think Les Mis has Phantom beat
