Am I too dumb to understand why people think E.T. is so special?

I remember seeing either his audition or screen test, he stood there in front of those people and made himself completely break down, they were just like "holy frick kid, you got it"

And then when he's finished he instantly snaps back out of acting mode. Pretty amazing to see anyone able to act like that especially a young kid.

The first time I saw it, with my then girlfriend, it choked me up, but I didn't cry.

The second time, the GF and I took her 8 or 9 year old sister. She was absolutely sobbing at the end. Even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, if anything, her tears made it even harder to keep my composure, but I did.

Most emotionally effective? I can't say. In the top 5? For me, unequivocally, yes.

It has a serious pedo vibe that I've never been cool with. Even in 1982, when I was 10, I wasn't that into it.

I don't know anyone with a soul who isn't a complete blubbering mess as the end of that film.

The end is a bit of a tear-jerker, but even as a guy in his late 40s, I can' see pale ET laying in the creek after Halloween without tearing up.

If it was a new release, tunnel-vision right wingers on this board would post a YouTube link to a neckbeard talking about it making white males into villains.

Had to try pretty hard to shoe horn some politics into this topic

Like the scene where ET uses his powers to make the little boy and girl kiss each other. Go watch it again. It has a lot of creepy pedo vibes.

i think ET made Elliot kiss the girl at school.

ET was too busy watching that romance movie. but their connection was so strong that they felt what each other felt at any given time.

The little boy and the creepy, wrinkled, hooded old alien that he can't tell anyone about - except other children. Right.

You're just joking right? I mean only a warped, disturbed person would actually believe that, so I am giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Hachi is so sad...and it's a dog movie so it's going to get you...and it's actually a TRUE story...and not BASED on or INSPIRED BY.

They have a statue of the dog at that train station in Japan.

Well, we already know that Carol Ann from Poltergeist was raped to death by Steven Spielberg and The Fonz. So, it's not a long walk to Spielberg putting pedo imagery and messaging in ET.

Sorry for the confusion.

If documentaries are movies then it's Dear Zachary. I've never been affected by anything I've watched like that.
