Downton Abbey and Mad Men are my two television obsessions at the moment. I can't say that one is better than the other, but both highly enjoyable for different reasons.

WTF!? someone please tell me why? from what ive heard, it sounds like a glorified chick show. and yet its being herald as the best show ever (rivaling the wire?).

i honestly want to know why this is so good.

Apples and oranges.

But Downton has the advantage of moving along at a lightning pace. I swear, more happens in one hour of that show than in a season of most other series.

No way...Downton Abbey will get real old pretty soon...they all do, every Brit drama...that's why they usually only export Brit-coms.

Breaking Bad is an incredible show, but it doesn't have much depth.

I care about 3 times as many of the characters on Mad Men as I do on Breaking Bad.

I car about twice as many of the characters on Downton Abbey as I do on Breaking Bad.

This assumes that the number of characters you "care" about and how much content is crammed in an episode are main measures of how good a show is. I don't agree. Whether it's focus on a single character or multiple characters the quality of the writing and acting is what defines the overall quality of a production IMHO. In that regard, Breaking Bad is pretty hard to beat. I haven't seen Downton Abbey yet but I will definitely check it out. It sounds similar to Gosford Park which is one of my favorite movies.

I tried to watch the first episode last week on Netflix, but kept dozing off. Maybe I'll try again a little earlier in the evening to see if it's any better.

I've never had any desire to watch Mad Men or Breaking bad but Downton Abbey is as good as it gets for it genre.

Maggie Smith is awesome
I would swear that she has a writer only dedicated to her and her zingers

I really liked Luther and Sherlock, so I guess I have to give this Downton Abbey a shot.

My favorite Roger zinger was when Draper walked into the office after pitching to the Cancer Association.

Roger shouts out into the hall, "Hey! Did you get cancer?"
