When I watched it in college, I was a bit inspired and thought McCandless was awesome.

When I watched it again after I graduated, I was annoyed with the guy and didn't really like what he did.

Plus, he was a dumbass in Alaska.

I just left feeling like the guy was a complete dumbass. And I'll be damned if you take down a moose with a .22lr.

Don't judge me based on a stupid website nickname that I took from Talladega Nights. I have a deep-seeded interest in unplugging and living life away from the machine that is modern society.

But if I ever were to do that, I sure as shite would know basic survival skills and have a map. I'd know how to skin and clean an animal I killed. I'd know what berries to eat and not to eat. I'd know where there are paths to safety and civilization.

This guy was a fricking moron who was pompous enough to believe he could brave Alaska's harsh weather without even having taken a basic field survival course. I understand his desire to leave civilization, which is why I was, in some ways, drawn to his character, but at the end of the day I have no sympathy for him.

I was just kidding man. I'm not judging. Just joking. I obviously felt the same way in some sense because I can't make up my mind if I was happy for him or disguted with his actions. Ha.

This. It's one of the most pretentious movies I've ever seen. And Emile Hirsch plays the part with perfect smugness.

No worries. I didn't take offense. I believe the uncomfortableness of facing one's own sense of Romanticism is why the movie is at all intriguing. Otherwise, frankly, it was a little boring. I would imagine the only people who had any sort of enjoyment out of the movie are those with a strong sense of doing or desire to do something "more" with their lives, people who have an inflated sense of self (like me) who want to either make a mark on the world or who want to disengage from it entirely. Basically, people who are Romantics. And this movie tells the tale of an extreme Romantic who paid dearly for his pride and for his outlook on the world.

I appreciated his sense of individualism but his hubris at believing he was in any way prepared for this undertaking was foolhardy.

How did that work out for you? Serious question. Not being a jerk. What happened?

I didn't do it anything like him. I'm not a true adventurer like a lot of people I met. I stayed for a long time in in mexico, nicaragua, peru. Then I went to italy, stayed there for probably 6 weeks and then started country jumping a bit more on my last month. I studied alot, met a lot of people but also spent a lot of time all by myself. It's empowering. Also gives you a renewed appreciation for your life at home.

I loved the idea of what he was doing but in the end couldn't help thinking he was a dumbass. We drove up to Alaska in a VW van from Georgia and camped within 20 miles of his bus. That's as far as I want to take that. His death just seemed completely pointless.

He was in no way prepared for Alaska but his philosophy struck a chord with me when I was younger. I didn't like how cruel he was with his family. He resented them and was largely driven by anger.

There is no happy ending. To me it screamed... Don't be a frick tard and live in the wilderness by yourself and say frick civilization where the medication i need is there.

This guy was a complete and utter idiot IMO. I get where he was coming from, but he did not think this through, hence, he was a complete idiot
