Not sure how I missed this one but just finished it. Truly a must see movie if you enjoy Denis Villeneuve’s work and haven’t watched this one yet.
Warning: it’s on the heavy side. Also, don’t Google anything about it or look at the reviews before watching.

There are a handful of movies that are super well-reviewed on IMDB and Letterboxed that aren’t very well known.
Starting with my down time during the early days of Covid, I’ve essentially watched all of them except for A Separation.
Off the top of my head, the movies I’ve watched that fit into this category are:
Short Term 12
Sing Street (a million times lighter than most of these films)
Incendies
Capernaum
Blindspotting
The Salesman
The Hunt
There are a couple more that I can’t remember off the top of my head, and I would have never heard of these if not for these websites.
I saw Incendies was free on Tubi a few days ago. I liked it but I didn’t think it was up to the level of most of the other films.
Interesting twist but it doesn’t seem feasible (I won’t say anything more if others haven’t watched the film all the way through).
Villaneuve is a great director but I preferred Prisoners and probably Polytechnique to this, among his earlier stuff.

Incendies is one fricked-up movie.
Blindspotting was my favorite movie of 2018, but I don't think many people saw it. Written by and starring one of the stars of Hamilton.

I'm a huge DV fan but never watched this movie until I found it streaming a few weeks ago. It's so messed up but so good

This is a great movie and might be Villeneuve's best. It's super compelling and I couldn't turn away for even a second. The twist reminds me a bit of Old boy in that it's an actual surprise and kinda messed up.

It is indeed.
But one of the best foreign movies ever made.
Masterful storytelling.

By no means....by no means read up anything about it. Watch it like three blind mice.

I watched this last night after seeing this thread. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I didn’t think the story was very good. It was just provocative for the sake of being provocative. I can tell an f’ed up story too, that doesn’t make me a good storyteller. Nothing about the story was realistic or possible. Also, for a topic with many grey areas such as the Lebanese civil war, it was completely one-sided in portraying Christians as evil fricks and Muslims as innocent people just trying to live free. Having a gun with a picture of Mary taped to the side of executing a little girl is ridiculous. Most Christians fled Lebanon during that time, but sure they were the aggressors.

The woman who is the mother of the main characters was a Christian, and the prison rapists (trying to keep it relatively spoiler free) were Muslim and were specifically trained by a Muslim leader who is still alive.
No one from that era gets a particularly good edit, except for the uncle who writes editorials calling for peace who everyone ignores.

So she murdered the Christian leader and went to a Muslim prison? That doesn’t make any sense

She murdered one of the Muslim leaders, not the guy who trained the rapists but the one who was more senior. She was tutoring his grandson and won their confidence.
That part isn’t well directed because it feels like it’s missing a scene tbh.
One of the ideas that is lightly hinted at is that these people can pass for the rival side with no effort bc they have the same culture, same look, etc. I don’t think it’s an especially novel concept as Armenians and Turks can pass for one another, Serbs and Bosnians, etc.
Chamseddine and especially Abou Tarek are super Muslim names, though the latter is obviously given after the fact.

You're full of shite. It's a complete slow burn.

The “twist” was more for shock factor than adding to the story. Felt like a letdown
