They can in a fictional world.

There are quite a few things that happen in other horror movies that also can't happen in real life, too.

A couple that I'm glad made the list is Rec and Martyrs. The Babadook, It Follows, and The Witch don't belong on the list IMO. They were good, but not top 100 good.

The Witch is absolutely worthy. It was a fantastic horror movie that the general public just didn't get.

Well "monster movie" isn't a genre so that doesn't make any sense.

Jaws is a classic monster movie at best.

But it's not horror. Has very little hallmarks of horror...things happening that are not expected. They even admit in Jaws, with Quint...that this is expected...with the Indianapolis.

If people don't think Monster movie is still a genre, than Jaws has to be a Thriller...not Horror.

Yeah Jaws isn't a horror movie...there's nothing supernatural about the ocean
Horror movies do not need to be about the supernatural.

It's a thriller.
There are a couple of things that make Jaws a horror movie.

1. The size of the shark. It's ridiculously and unrealistically huge. That's actually supernatural in a way.

2. The movie is meant to terrify. The creepy music. The first person camera. It's meant to scare.

Your opinion is a joke here. This shite isn’t so serious.

I thought it was very good and the best of the three I mentioned. MAYBE I could find a spot on the top 100 for it.

Horror movies.

1. Supernatural
2. Killer

Neither apply to Jaws...because a shark killing isn't abnormal or against the law. That's natural...it's the fish's meal. Or the fish is protecting it's terrority.

My Dinner with Andre is also not a Horror movie.

Is Jaws a too big shark that won't quit? Yes.

But that just makes him a monster but everything the fish does is natural. Horror has to have some unnatural or supernatural...or at least stuff we don't condone as a society...and since we can't police the Ocean...I don't see how that applies. Just because something is scary doesn't make it a horror movie, tons of thrillers are scary.

Jaws is not a thriller because thrillers are generally more psychological in nature. They require the viewer to think and they require an explanation as to what is happening in the film. Does that sound like Jaws? No. The Silence of the Lambs is more of a thriller than Jaws is.

This is actually supernatural.

Jaws is a supernatural killer. Both of the things on your list.

He is unnatural in size and behavior and kills.

Also personally I'd have the 1991 version of Night of the Living Dead replacing the original.

That remake is a decent film but this is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on TD.

Good point.

About size...and killing...

But sharks kill and that's normal and Great Whites can be large. Like I said, they do make him a monster.

I still think it's a monster movie at best but filmed like a thriller.

I just find it one of the odd additions to the Horror 100. I guess because it scared the crap out of people it qualifies but it just doesn't fit the horror definition IMO. Horror is unique it isn't just it scared us...hell dramas can scare you.

But I guess if original Pirannha can be a horror movie, Jaws is too.

But it's the combination of factors.

1. It scares us. It was filmed to be terrifying. Stalker like. Creepy music.

2. The shark is supernatural in size.

3. The shark is supernatural in behavior. It kills relentlessly like Jason would. It stalks like Jason.

It's all of the factors that make it horror.

Wrong.

Supernatural
adj.
(of a manifestation or event) attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature.

The definition isn't limited to ghosts or the spirit realm. Just anything that goes beyond scientific understanding. We see this in Jaws. You have multiple instances where Hooper and Quint are baffled by the shark's behavior. Two that come immediately to mind:

1. The scene where the shark is able to dive with four barrels attached to him. Hooper turns to Quint and asks if he had ever seen anything like this before. Quint's response? "Hell no."

2. The part where the shark starts to chase the boat as they are heading back to land. Brody asks Hooper if he had ever had a shark do this. Before Brody can even finish his question, Hooper sharply tells him "NO!" as if the question itself was ridiculous.

You also have the sequels to bear in mind. Three sequels which are part of the Jaws franchise that imply that these sharks were coming back because they had a grudge against the Brody family. That's not normal shark behavior. That's what we call supernatural.

You're right about that.

I still think it's just a thriller and a monster movie.

But you and Abell...

Sure you can see Jaws as some supernatural devil...the fish is out of control.

I mean, I don't think fear makes every movie a horror movie...but I can see how Jaws is horror villian...like I said, I have to admit that I thought the original Pirannha was a horror movie (but they were super-engineered by humans to be killers) that helps to make it a horror. Jaws is still just a fish doing his thing like Nemo.

But yeah, he's sort of crazy because he keeps attacking...so I see your point about horror. The damn fish just won't stop like Myers.

Hey, by 3 or 4 the shark went either all the way up or down the East Coast looking for someone in particular. I seen it!
