but my eyes have definitely gotten used to the higher quality that Blu-ray/streaming offers.
I can't imagine watching a dvd on a dvd player & thinking "ugh, I can't even watch this low quality definition". Sure, there are movies out there that would be better on blu-ray/4k, but acting like DVD's are trash bc they aren't the highest level of HD seems silly.

I think it’s definitely different from person to person
I remember my parents searching for a new TV for months being like “oh this one is way better, oh that one is terrible, etc” and they all looked almost exactly the same to me
and I have way better eyesight than they do

It depends somewhat for me.
Even the good MCU movies are photographically very ugly. If you have the option of watching them in standard-def for significantly cheaper than high-def, I would take that offer. You aren’t going to be missing much with those missing pixels.
Then, there are cinematically exquisite movies from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s that deserve to be seen in 4K.

You’re lucky to have such discerning parents. I remember how difficult it was to teach my parents that widescreen was better than full screen.

Currently, it says Josey Wales is on both Hulu and HBO Max, but my point is it will eventually be moved off and you’ll have to wait a while to return.
Play Misty for Me is available for rent from Amazon and YouTube, but for $3.99 per rental, you could have just invested in a DVD copy for $5.99 and had it to keep.
Sounds like a good reason to sail the high seas, matey. As long as your ship has a VPN hull.

Completely agree. I have no concerns that 8K content (when/if it ever actually arrives) is going to make 4K discs (and even a lot of Blu-ray discs) obsolete.

Digital is convenient, but you don't really own anything
Honest question. What good is owning a movie that is available on streaming? Let's not act like this is renting a house verses owning a house level. Most of the DVDS I own, which was probably hudreds, would have to be sold at a garage sell for $.50. This is a product that I don't have to own to enjoy.

I have never in my life had this happen so there's really no sense in me making a decision off of this.

you can also have someone/someAI decide something is not going to be available to stream anymore

For example?
It really need not be for any political reason that a movie gets edited and be the only version available on streaming.
Currently, Disney+ only shows the 2020 cut of the Star Wars trilogy (this is what, version 20 of the trilogy?).
Having a well kept copy of the 1995 remastered (but still essentially the theatrical cuts) of the films in VHS or the corresponding laserdiscs from 1993 or the very limited edition 2006 DVD release (which was just a rip from the 1993 laserdiscs) is a wise investment, because I doubt Disney+ will stream the theatrical cuts anytime soon.

The only hard copies I’m still purchasing are the criterion collection films.

VHS lasted around 20 years
Disk based still going at 25 years old, and they have a life expectancy of 100 years.
Formats change DVD -> Blue Ray
Streaming started to kill discs off in 2018.
Downloading to mass storage will be your friend. Either stripping from the disk you have or downloading from Information Super Highway.

What mainstream streaming service has "Song of the South"?
Which one has "Gone With the Wind" without "content warnings"?

seriously? the rifles were removing from the cops hands at the end of ET and there's like a 5 minute apology at the beginning of Gone With the Wind. They completely deleted the episode from the universe of Bill Nye where he talked about there being only 2 sexes...nevermind the big studios censor just about every movie released to appease their China audiences...
get your head out of the sand.

you might want to pull out that analog tape sometime. its going to look like a 1940s tv show on the world's first color tv now.

Well, that one is a tad outdated now. True when the 20th anniversary rerelease came out on DVD, it made it hard to find the original theatrical cut.
But it has been a long while Ive seen the 2002 cut sold in stores, and I’ve never actually seen it offered for streaming since streaming became a thing. It has always been the 1982 cut.

I mean if that happens to a movie you like, then buy it. But I'm not going to buy a bunch of DVDs thinking in the back of my head, "you never know, these might get edited one day."

Wise as in "this is the only place I can watch this version" or "they will be worth something one day." Because just looking on ebay, you get get a 1995 remastered VHS set of the trilogy for like $10. But then I'd also have to keep around a working VHS player. I don't care for that version THAT much better. There's no way I'm hooking up/keeping around a VHS player just to play three movies.
If someone likes having hard copies more, then that is good. But I don't see a good argument of why it is definitely the way to go. It's not like their is some financial return you're getting on your investments unless you're buying rare/collectible versions.
LOTR trilogy in 4k at Target: $90
2,500+ movies and tv shows including LOTR trilogy on HBO Max: $15 a month

now its reached a point of apathy and they can run riot over any inconvenient piece of history they want to erase.

I just pick which version to watch on Plex.
And don't get me started on Empire -- I have like 6 different versions of that one.

Yeah? Can you please tell me how long the licensing deal is with HBO Max for the LOTR trilogy?

Okay, fine. Buy the 2006 limited editions with the theatrical cuts as bonus discs I also mentioned. (They’re basically rips from the 1993 laserdiscs, but don’t look bad.) There, negates you have to find a VCR. They’ll work on Blu Ray players. And yes, they are an investment in enjoyment if you want a good wholesome movie to sit down with family to watch than you spend $10 a month on a Disney+ account with inferior versions.
