Barney is why HIMYM is great. If he wasn't on the show I probably wouldn't watch it.

CBS hasn't had a good sitcom since All in the Family

oh i don't know a little something called Alice.

but seriously all in the family is arguably top 5 of all time material. it was ground breaking. of course major dad isn't gonna compare. it's like saying there aren't any bands like the beatles anymore.

is this show terrible?
yea it is. everyone I know IRL that loves this show has a terrible sense of humor.

CBS sitcoms are just terrible. I much prefer the Office, Modern Family, 30 rock, etc types of comedy shows and not the live audience/laugh track, fake studio furniture, type shows

It's like it wants to be a smarmier Friends.

It is Friends, just updated for the next generation. I personally like the show but most of the people that don't like it here seem to be really put off by the main character being a whiny douche.

And why is NPH's homosexuality being pointed out as a negative for the show?
Not a negative for the show, but for some viewers. NPH goes way over the top in portraying his character, and the fact that he is gay makes it even more unconvincing.

Really?? Come on man....his character is hysterical. Of course it's over the top - just like Charlie Sheen's character in Two and a Half Men, Michael's character in The Office, etc. That's what makes it so crazy and therefore the show so funny in my opinion.

I don't agree with this either....I think Ted is a riot and his exchanges with Marshall and Barney and the rest of the characters are priceless.

By the way....the whole "5 slaps" theme that is overarching to all of the show's episodes is awesome.

I love the show, I love NPH as Barney, and I also think the main character can tend to be a whiny douche.

I've seen it 3 or 4 times. It's hasn't really reeled me in yet as a show but I have to say that I have a hard time taking my eyes off of Cobie Smulders. She might be kind of plain looking but I'd sure like to crush her

Maybe it's just me, but Robin was alot cuter in the early seasons.

Barney is hilarious. Marshall and Lilly are kinda funny sometimes. Ted and Robin are pretty meh. NPH pretty much carries the show in most episodes IYAM.

I couldn't believe Cobie Smulders's baby's daddy is Jimmy, the overly touchy orderly, from Scrubs. What's the deal with that?

Robin took a dip in the 2nd and 3rd seasons but got super hot in 4 and 5. Some of my favorite banter is between Lilly and Marshall. They're great. Also anything with Barney and his job is solid gold.

yes it is bad. Not funny. The gay is a detriment.

I'm sorry but this is one of my favorite shows and I follow a lot of different shows. I don't think any other show has made me laugh more and Barney Stinson is one of the best characters going right now. It is very well written and is really fresh. Watch from beginning, you won't regret it.

Oh and those of you who doubt it so much, it has just been renewed for 2 more seasons. That's 8 seasons. Not a whole lot of shows last that long. Longevity is something that shouldn't be taken lightly in this regard.

+100

it is well written. they do have a few misses every once and a while but overall i really dig this show. especially how it's set up as far as the narrative/storytelling and how his perception sometimes comes into play vs what really happened or how sometimes he edits material because he's telling the story to his kids.

"Sandwiches" = "weed"
"Holding hands" = "sex"
... both have been running gags in multiple episodes

"This guy in the park sold me some great sandwiches! You wanna make brownies with them??"
