Hmm. I misinterpreted it then. I always thought it was basically a joint decision between the two.

It is and it isn't. The gypsins have a lot of birds because they are a free folk and they are raised with those beliefs. The daemons can help guide a person as a sounding board, it's basically talking to your mirror self.

In episode 3, Lyra asked Farder Coram what happened if a human didn't like the shape their daemon chose and he said it would point to a "very conflicted individual". Note also the male/female dichotomy, representing the yin and yang of the self. I believe Pullman confirmed after publishing that trans individuals would have a daemon of the same sex but I don't recall that being explored in the novels at all.

Why did Mrs. Coulter destroy the University? Spite? Why was the magistereum official dismayed by that? Why does the magistereum allow Coulter to explore "dust"?

She thought the master was hiding Lyra. And I think she told them to find anything that was heresy, I might be mistaken though. I wasnt crazy about that scene, tearing up the place was kind of useless. They were just running around flipping over books.

Im really liking the series, but I prefer the way the books portray Mrs Coulter and her daemon much better. In the books you dont really see the evil in her so blatantly. It is shown more in her golden monkey than in her. You know it is her that is her thats cunning and evil obviously, but Mrs Coulter herself comes off different. She wasnt a black belt in karate either.

The Magisterium dont really act like straight thug police. Tearing up colleges and raiding boats of non church groups. She's kind of using up the power/authority that she has been granted. Not sure if thats the best way to put it, but she's acting out, and they dont like the way she is doing it.

There's still a lot to learn about Mrs Coulter and the Oblation Board.

Actually, she had concluded Lyra was not there when she gave the order. I think it shows her just beneath the surface rage, which seems to be a weakness along w/ her suicidal thoughts. The black dude w/ the snake is supporting her 100%. Loved the hand-cannon she used.

Bold of the author to venture into those waters with all of the genders out there today . "My daemon is gender fluid."

Lyra's world is reminiscent of the Dark Ages, when monasteries run by the RCC were the centers of education (religious), theology, and scientific research, and they exerted a tremendous amount of influence over what subjects and what science could be studied and what was forbidden and heretical.

Jordan College isn't a religious institution, but it is governed by a religious organization and must play within the rules as much as possible.

The Magisterium was pissed at her because (1) publicly lashing out at an esteemed conglomerate of Britain's wealthiest and most educated people is a terrible look and (2) because the Magisterium is incredibly involved with its own scientific research and doesn't want to tip it's hand about anything or ruin it's chances to learn more.

Dust doesn't really become important until the third novel, which is much more philosophical than the first two. Once you find out what the Magisterium thinks Dust is, you'll understand why they think it's so important. Lord Asriel provided some clues in his speech to Jordan College.

re: HIS DARK MATERIALS Season Long Thread - S1 Ep6: "The Daemon Cages"
BUMP for Episode 4.

"Armor" put a close on the character introductions and finally introduced, albeit rather cryptically, the three big remaining plot points.

Next week might be another slow installment but looks to be the first big reveal that will accelerate the second half of the season.

I didn't like the casting of Lin-Manuel Miranda when announced, and I dont like it or the retooling of Lee Scorseby's character in practice either. I'm prepared for that to be an unpopular opinion to the greater show audience.

The movie from a few years ago sucked, but casting Sam Elliot for that role was brilliant. That’s exactly how I picture Lee in the book.

Yeah, that was pitch perfect casting.

LMM is 39 and still looks like (no offense to him) a theater actor. Are we really to believe that he is a grizzled mercenary for hire with a long history of fighting beside a panserbjørn in military conquest?

I think they decided the cast was too somber and wanted to liven it up, so they made Lee into a foppish cartoon. And I'm sure this is just nitpicking, but Hester barely talked in the novel and always appeared to be asleep while actually carefully eyeing and analyzing every situation. It was jarring to hear her constantly joking with Lee during a slapstick fight.

That was a bit ridiculous. Im not a fan of that casting either. Or maybe the way they are portraying his character more so than the actor himself. I can see them needing to liven the show up a bit, bc it is partly a young adult book, but the fight scene with Hekker's commentary was just goofy.

Other than that, it was a good episode imo. I thought they did a good job with Iorek and his looks, like they have with all the animals. His personality kind of fit and I like the voice they used for him. I was surprised they went away from how him and Lyra met though. That was kind of an intense scene in the book.

I can't remember the movie so don't really remember Sam's performance, but Lee is a Texan if I remember correctly?

Doesn't seem like either casting was really going for what he was in the novel, which I guess I understand since its BBC.

And I agree with the above. That fight in the bar was bad.

Rewatched the episode, good stuff. Surprised not many people on here are watching it.

Apparently it is doing really well in the U.K. It had about 700,000 viewers for the series premier on HBO but it had 7.2 million viewers on BBC One. That was the biggest drama series debut in 5 years in the U.K.

Cant find the wekk to week ratings.

Dont read the beginning of this thread, you'll think that if you read the books you'll turn into a devil worshiper.

Books are worth a read. The 1st book being by far the best imo.

It's already farther from the books than I would have expected it to have been by now but it hasn't made me enjoy it any less though. They hit fast forward on a few things for sure. For the most part.

Ala Watchmen, this was the best episode so far imo. Poor Billy Costa. That was tuff.
