The telephone pole scene was taken from a true, real-life incident in 2004 in Marietta, Georgia.
Creepy as hell.
Creepy as hell.

i agree its not "scary".
its disturbing. The performances in it are great. I think thats why is garners such praise.

The modern horror fanbase seems to me more slanted toward the latter. Hereditary was a well acted, well made movie that just wallowed in misery, sadism and outright wickedness. It certainly provoked a lot of emotions in me while I was watching it, but they weren't welcome emotions or particularly interesting ones for me to experience. I would never bother watching it again and it seems the director enjoys that line of thinking, so I'll avoid him in the future.
Ari Aster did say that his aim was to make a film that made the audience uncomfortable, and I think he delivered. Speaking of emotions, I felt so sorry for Annie and her family because they never realized that they were just pawns in a diabolical game orchestrated by the cult. Ellen sealed their fates when she made the deal with Paimon.

I was a bit confused at times. What the hell was the mother doing on the ceiling? ....and how did she remain to there?

*Spoilers*
I sat next to a buddy of mine who lost a brother to suicide earlier in his life and when Charlie’s death scene happened and Toni Collete was screaming in agony, he literally got up and had to walk out of the theatre to catch his breathe. I’ve never heard a theatre go silent after a scene like it did that night.
That being said I understand that Hereditary isn’t for everyone. I was just in shock by what I saw that night and I think a lot of that had to do with me not watching any trailers for the movie or reading up on it. I just went into it blind and got my mind blown.
I also went into the movie completely blind and I'm glad I did. The beheading scene was so shocking because it was so sudden. You knew something was going to happen, but you didn't know what. It happened so suddenly that the audience had no time to prepare. When they showed the telephone pole the second time, you could see the cult's symbol carved into it, so you knew that Charlie's death was a part of their plan.

You would probably like Haunt.

I watched it on a friend’s recommendation, having no idea what it was or what it was even supposed to be about (I didn’t even know it was a horror movie, he just said “watch this movie, I thought it was really good”). I enjoyed it and thought the last 15 minutes or so were wild as frick.

Paimon, the demon the movie is centered on, was inside the daughter that was decapitated. This released it into the world. It wanted a male body as its host so its started using its influence to start breaking down the son mentally. I think Annie was somewhat possessed by Paimon during a séance, its been awhile since i watched it. So the mother was possessed during that moment, that was the demon controlling her.

Interesting take. I don’t know how you can be a horror movie fan and not really like this. It’s def top 10 for me. I’ve seen it prob 4 times.

This movie was extremely weird and creepy and was very well done. Enjoyed this movie.

It’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. And outside of Ex Machina and the Witch and few others A24 films are pretty awful. It wasn’t scary or suspenseful it was only disturbing.

Have you seen Room? I don't see how anyone could possibly hate that movie.

Seeing Hereditary at the movies, I think you have to properly categorize it in your mind. It's not an enjoyable film. It doesn't have a satisfying narrative. But it's a well-done film. It's original in the way that most movies aren't now. It contains scenes emotional intensity difficult to manufacture in a movie. It's also well acted. For that, you have to give Heredity its due.

What horror movies do you consider scary, suspenseful, and/or interesting?
Not many anymore at my age. I like "The Thing"...both of them. The Original Friday 13th...but that may be a holdover from childhood. Event Horizon was very good but not so much scary as intriguing. There are many others that I want bore everyone with.
Hereditary is up there with "The VVitch." ....highly praised and I just don't see it.

I know none of you that hate this movie will watch but for those that are interested the amount of re3search and use of real historical beliefs on demonology in this movie are off the chart. This youtube video covers all the detail, down to the smallest points on how this movie nailed the subject. How Hereditary got it right
I am going to watch it because I still feel like there is something deficient in me that caused me to miss something about this movie.

I can somewhat go along with this take.

You hated Ex Machina or never saw it?

Green Room is another A24 gem.

I think that this is why I haven't brought myself to watch it. I am sure that I would think that it was a great movie, but I just don't really want to feel dread and anxiety for 2 hours. I've watched plenty of similar toned movies that I am glad I watched, but from all I've heard and read about this movie, I just don't really want to watch it. I am sure I will some day.
