Hereditary question - Obv spoilers

First off....this might be one of the most fricked up movies I've ever seen.
Question is...would it be safe to say Peter's consciousness was still in him? When paimon was in Annie and Charlie they were still there but Paimon didn't want to be in them.
ETA Toni Collete was excellent in this...the kid that played peter was exceptional as well

ETAA: if you're gonna worship a demon, why frick around with paimon and not go all the way with Satan?

I think so, at least a part of it is. He's just not in control anymore. Paimon is.
The thing about this movie that disturbed me the most is that Annie's mother knew what was going to happen to her daughter and grandchildren. She set the ball in motion. Remember the letter that Annie found where her mother said that all of the pain and suffering would be worth it in the end. It was all part of the cult's plan.
Toni Collette should've received an Academy Award nomination for her work in Hereditary.

I remember reading an interview with Ari Aster where he said he decided that Satan is overused and that he should do something different.

Reading more on paimon I realize there are some attributes to him that worked for the story too
Needing a male host being one of them

Satan probably has a lot of worshippers. If you are the only group that worships Paimon he'll probably be more grateful and more likely to give you things. Pretty good strategy.

What if Peter didn’t identify as a male?

I'm sure that was funny in your head.

Maybe nothing is funny in your head

Great timing…I finally got around to watching last night. My wife hates horror movies and she was out of the house. I have avoided all spoilers so I watched it blind.
I really liked it…because I lean towards paranormal or supernatural horror …and this one paid off. I also like that he went all in on the ending rather than leave it up to the imagination about what was going on. The score was interesting too…there was a very light “thump thump” heartbeat rythym during tense scenes that was so slight I muted the TV because I thought one of the kid was upstairs messing around.
After watching I was reading up on it and realized that there was a lot more going on that I didn’t pick up on originally. That would be my only critique in that I think the director could have brought a little more of this to the front so the viewer picks up on it rather than having to watch commentary after the movie walking through what was going on. Maybe I’m just obtuse but it’s tough to pick up on everything in the moment.
That said…good movie. I kept thinking that if I was Gabriel Byrne I’d have grabbed my kid about halfway through and gotten TF out of there. Also thought it was funny when she had her support group meeting (didn’t pick up that the whole thing was staged by cult members)
“My grandmother and I were estranged…”
“”My brother killed himself because he thought my mother was trying to put people inside of him”
“My son is scared of me because when I was sleep walking I doused us both with paint thinner and had a lighted match…I obviously wasn’t trying to set him on fire”
My first thought was the members of that group must be thinking “WTF lady…”

Look at this boomer normie. Who still worships Satan? Is it 1987?

I thought it was a dumb movie on first watch. Maybe I should give it another chance with how much praise it gets around here.

Those last 15 minutes are up there with the creepiest in horror movie history.

Read a review on it or watch an explanation video on YouTube. There are definitely details that can be missed

A lot of over-the-top shock. Great production value, but the 70s did it with more pizazz.
