Plus 2

Heath played a good mad man, but he wasn't the end all to that archetype.

At the time I thought Nicholson was the best thing in Batman. After Begins, I find that movie unwatchable, dated, garbage.

Nothing says evil like this :

Ledger's realistic performance and portrayal of a comic book villian was unparalleled. Made Nicolson's Joker look goofy and forgettable, although it's not Nicholson's fault, that's how the role was written and produced.

Nicholson was Nicholson.

Ledger was the Joker.

I literally cannot fathom that you could sit there and watch clips head to head and think that not only was Jack better, but significantly better.

Like I said, I don't blame Jack, the role and movie overall was much more whimsical, even goofy, than DK.

Jack was right out of the comic book, Ledger was what I always imagined the Joker would be in real life.

I don't think it's really fair to compare the two performances. Jack's performance had to fit what Tim Burton's vision required, and as we all know, Tim Burton has very specific tastes. If Nolan had directed the first Batman movie, I'm sure Jack Nicholson's Joker would have been reeeeeeeeallllly diffrent, and vice versa. But Ledger was better, and really thats just my opinion. Both guys were fantastic.

I would imagine most people who claim that Ledger's performance was miles ahead of Jack's are too young to remember Jack's performance at the time it was released. They probably only watched it on video. Jack's performance was great for its time. Very few people who saw the original Burton Batman in the theater weren't blown away by it and didn't love Jack's performance.

The problem with watching "clips head to head" is that they are two totally different movies, basically different genres, as others have pointed out due to the 20 years that separate them.

While Ledger's performance is great, I agree that he would not have won the awards that he did, or even been nominated, had the circumstances been different.

Honestly, does anyone think that Jack wouldn't have won an Oscar if he died just after filming Batman and before the film was released? He would have won BEST actor, not Supporting actor.

People who pretend that didn't influence the way the performance is looked at are just being dishonest.

And I believe he would have won an award had he lived, Golden Globe def because the cocksuckers at the Oscars are always harder to please.

and I am old enough to have seen Nicholson's version, saw it when it came out and LMAO because he was hilarious, but I never felt threatened with fear like I watched some people's faces watching Ledger's joker, that's when you know you have done your job.

I loved both but I'm gonna give it to Ledger.

And I know this isn't the thread but DAMN do I wanna see them let Jim Carey try to play a very dark psycho riddler. I really think he would pull it off great at this point in his career

Always thought he deserved another shot at the Riddler without Schumacher fricking up his performance.
