I agree...Heath passed away while Nolan was still putting together TDK. I doubt he was thinking so far ahead. I'm sure Heath would've been in the sequel, but as a secondary villain.

I think they had an idea or outline of how the final film was going to be. I think the Joker would’ve been used as almost an ally to Batman against Bane. Maybe Bane frees the Joker to help tire Batman out before breaking him. Then the Joker dislikes the reality of Bane controlling everything and it becomes the enemy of my enemy is my friend type deal for Batman. Maybe something like that.
I have zero doubt they would’ve brought The Joker back though. With his line about “We’re destined to do this forever” you gotta think they had some intent to have him return. Not only that, I’m sure they knew it make them more money.

You guys are putting too much stock into this quote. I'm fairly confident it's more of a call out to the fact that Batman and Joker have always been adversaries throughout the history of the comic books.

What I remember hearing was that the plot would be the same, but with the Joker instead of Scarecrow holding court. In other words, a cameo, or maybe at best a secondary hero. The primary plot would have remained Bane.
I would have absolutely hated that.

Yeah it would have been dumb and a waste of the character. I can say with 99% certainty that this was not the plan and whoever started the rumor is full of shite

Someone recut a part of DKR where Catwoman blasts through the wall on the bike taking out Bane...it is the blast then you hear the laugh...then out of the dust comes the Joker and he says, "See, I told you that you and I were going to do this forever."
Link?

Taking out Bane together & then a clashing of idiologies would've been redundant & just not fit well for the history of the series imo. Maybe something like 3 factions against each other (Bane, Joker, Batman)

My only contribution to this thread is that OML doesn’t know what the frick he’s talking about.

Just makes me infuriated that Jared Leto is killing the joker that Ledger made so goddamn good.
seriously. they should get real actors in these movies instead of amateurs. Get brad pitt for batman and tom hanks for the joker
