I always imagined it as a giant rock that had towers and hallways built into it. I thought it was beyond having walls. I imagined it to be the most impressive of the major castles.

Much more risky task than taking them by surprise
Plus it sets up the second part of their plan which will force Danys forces to abandon the rock and march on land which will put them at a severe disadvantage
