Rattleshirt has only been in a handful of episodes. The impact of him taking Mance's place wouldn't really be felt (other than the obvious point that Mance wouldn't really be dead). If they had decided to stick with the books, they probably would have picked another character to take his place.

Tormund is a TV show fan favorite, so I'm going to assume they will make Tormund become the leader and plays Mance's role from now on.

Can someone remind me what happened to Mance in the books?

Jon sends Mance to Winterfell as a bard along with a few women to rescue "Arya", whom Jon believes is there.

I think this is a good logical conclusion. He will be the wildlings liaison from here on out.

We don't actually think they burned Mance in the show do we? That was still rattle shirt?

Rattleshirt is present at the burning, so I thought they were just being very non-discreet about it. He is dead though. It's not the worst thing to leave out by any means, but I really liked the scene in the yard where he spars with Jon and kicks the shite out of him. Jon thinking how the hell can this skinny little shite hit so hard and it turning out to be Mance was good stuff. As far as the show goes, I like Tormund better anyway. Both are great in the book, but Mance is intelligent as well as dangerous where Tormund is hilarious as well as dangerous.

Yeah, Tormund can fill that role. But, with Sansa apparently going to Winterfell and there being no Manderly, who knows what the hell happens, except the torrent leak viewers, of course.
