Sam basically fits the lovable, bumbling idiot archetype. Actually, every time I see him I always think of this character:
My point is, he's fat, pretty much incompetent, and impulsive. He does things that make you scratch your head at times, but in the end he comes through with a moment that either endears you to him or has large ramifications for the grand plot -- but it's never intentional. Maybe he discovers the White Walkers have a weakness to dragon glass because one lunges at him and he accidentally shanks it with the dagger. Someone puts 2 and 2 together, weakness is discovered, and down the road with the help of Daenerys/dragons weapons are forged to combat the threat from beyond the Wall.
Incompetent fat guy archetype fulfilled.

dragon glass
Having said that I now realize that a dragon could be said heat source.
Conundrum in my opinion, is the name to be taken literally or is it just a cleaver name for something formed in another manner (dragonless)….

I think they said it. Let me check.
ETA: Season 2, Episode 8 is when they find the cache. They don't say anything about it, so maybe it's an errant assumption. For some reason I felt like the dragon glass/obsidian was principally formed by dragon fire on stone in Westeros.

Don't think they have given much of a backstory on it. However, the name, would lead us to believe dragons play a role in it's formation.
More important to me is, where did this stockpile that they found at the fist of the first men come from?

Also, the scene with Sam telling the girl about the dragon glass he found...Do y'all think it was made using dragon fire?
I was under the assumption that the reason it is called dragonglass is because it was made from dragon fire.

And if so, can he use it to kill White Walkers since fire is the only thing that kills them?
Good question. My guess would be yes, but I have no idea.

Right, but I was quoting Super Troopers, not WWatCF. gudeaux's quote was from ST (then my line).

I know they found it digging, but maybe after so many years the actual landmark or markers were destroyed. Then gus gus and friends were lucky enough to find it.

If so, nobody seems to realize this because in the first episode of the season when Sam gets attacked he certainly didn't try pull this dagger out.

I don't think it will matter in the overall scheme of things because we know the blonde girl actually has dragons that she can presumably use to kill all of the White Walkers. I would imagine she will kill all of the White Walkers and become the next queen but I could be very wrong.

Also, Sam clearly knew some history about the first men. The other guys were all clueless and pretty much appear to be uneducated common criminal type guys. So Sam being the only smart person north of the wall may very well be the only person to figure it out.
Boom purpose for Sam is identified. He is the only person north of the wall that actually knows some history.

She has three dragons. My impression is that the number of Walkers is growing by the day, and it's already a sizable amount. And if they "turn" people...you're looking at a potentially massive invasion force. Then factor in the size of Westeros, it becomes implausible that three dragons could be enough to completely eradicate the forces from beyond the Wall. The dragons will be important, I'm certain of that, but I just can't imagine them being enough on their own.

That makes sense but perhaps the Walkers cannot advance until the Winter spreads. I also think that the arrowhead fat boy has will play some role in his life being saved but may not have a purpose in the overall scheme of things. It willbeinteresting to find out. The story North of the wall is certainly one of the most boring to me so i would love to see more White Walkers. My favorite storyline is the dwarfs and I look forward to seeing him marry the redhead although i would rather see it happen and do away with all of the build up.

I'm quite familiar with your reference but thanks for making sure.
