Which is ironic, now that we know that Lysa killed Jon Arryn, her husband, to kick the whole thing off.

Staying neutral must have been LF's play the whole time, knowing that no one would expend the effort to take the Eyrie before resolving everything else - it isn't strategically in the way of anything and with no adult lord, being neutral is about the best anyone, except Robb and Cat at the beginning, could hope for.

I wouldn't say they were pro-Stark at all. Both of the Tully girls (Cate&Lysa) falsely accused the Lannister children of crimes. One of the girls was married to a Lord Stark the other to Lord Arryn. They are both dead, most of the Lords of the Vale(I think they have the most Lords of any kingdom, OLM Shark might know.) have no beef with either the Lannister or the Starks. The Vale decided to sit out the War of the 5 Kings.

The only reason they did not join with Robb was because of Littlefinger. Littlefinger kept Lysa and the Vale out of the war until he could marry Lysa herself. Now he is sitting on an untapped army who is pissed at Lysa and the Lannisters for the Starks and Tully's destruction. The Vale Lords were big fans of Ned and Robert.

Do you feel that they are more pissed off at the Lannisters or toward the Freys & Boltons?

First off, the Boltons involvement in the Red Wedding isn't exactly well known. People know there is something fishy about it, but there is no conclusive proof that the Boltons were directly involved in it.

Every single house in the Seven Kingdoms now hates the Freys. If you carry a Frey banner, almost regardless of allegiance, someone who sees it will start plotting to kill you. So yeah, everyone is pissed at the Freys.

Lannisters are the big one, but with Lord Tywin and Joffrey out of the way, they may look more towards the Freys.

This actually leaves Cersei in charge - which was LF's plan all along.

Yep. He also had to get Tyrion out of the way because he was the only person who saw Littlefinger for who he really was, he is clever and unpredictable, competent, and he knows about the framing of the dagger.

Now in charge is a batshit insane woman whose not nearly as clever as she thinks she is. As LF says in the books:

quote:

Every man's a piece to start with, and every maid as well. Even some who think they are players. Cersei, for one. She thinks herself sly, but in truth she is utterly predictable. Her strength rests on her beauty, birth, and riches. Only the first of those is truly her own, and it will soon desert her. I pity her then. She wants power, but has no notion what to do with it when she gets it.

Well, and Varys, who is with Tyrion now. I wonder how much LF knows of Varys' activities, now that he's not in KL to personally monitor all of that?

ETA: And I hate to delve back into it, but as I continue to monitor the Hodors (my former comrades) - Kashonly is asking if Sansa is on Arya's list.

Anyone else want to keep this thread going in the offseason? My goal is to catch up on the books by then and think this could be a good thread for discussion for that kind of stuff. Any other hodors that are in the process of reading like this idea?

Like a GOT "Middle Ground" Offseason thread?

I'd be interested - I'm going to read as much as possible and never think about the poor, ignorant Hodors ever again (<-- in my best Sansa voice).

Yeah, sure. But just like this thread keep discussion limited to what has already happened in the shows. I think it could work. I'm only about halfway through A Game of Thrones right now but I'm gonna try to power through a bunch of it this summer. I think it could be a pretty cool way to discuss if some of the book readers don't mind joining in with the discussion.

Besides, this will force me to do more reading

We would keep discussion of the events to what has happened in the shows

Discussion in here is still limited to book events up until the end of Season 4. If anyone wants to discuss book events past that point they need to go to the readers thread, crackpot thread, or create their own thread somewhere in between.

Yeah - Psych - we would need to keep the title consistent and you would be the best person to start it (no pressure) - and the rules - once you get past the show, reading wise, and just can't contain yourself, graduate to the Maester thread. This should be reserved for partial readers and gifted Hodors.

ETA: Psych - nice edit - that was easy.

Varys and LF's motives for the time being don't directly conflict with Varys, and Varys can theoretically be disposed of at any time without almost any fear of retribution.
