Here's my theory. If Ned told Catelyn "Hey, Jon isn't really my bastard. He's Lyanna and Rhaegar's son but we need to keep it secret so Robert doesn't bring his warhammer down on him or kill him like The Mountain did with the Targaryen babies," then Catelyn would've probably treated Jon as good as her own children. And, if Catelyn would've been on board, she probably would've want Jon to be legitimized, which would have brought attention to them and Robert, being the King, is the only one who could legitimize a bastard. I think Robert would have legitimized Jon if he had asked, but if we are to believe Jon is Ned's nephew and not his son, couldn't that have potentially put him in line for House Stark before Robb? Not sure if that would have sat well with Catelyn even if she knew the alleged truth that we've all been speculating about.
I don't think Ned wanted to bring anymore attention to the situation than there already was. He swore a vow to his sister and I am not sure if he trusted his wife with that sort of a secret/would not be sure of what her reaction would be.

Good question, I've been trying to figure that out myself. Like why wouldn't Howland, knowing that Ned is dead, go to the Wall and tell Jon himself?

Aegon the Conquerer was married to both of his sisters...so we know that at least a few of the Targaryens practiced polygamy.
Also, Elia was infertile after her 2 pregnancies.

This is from the DVD extras. Are the Lannisters and Martells enemies? The Mountain did kill the Martell chick that was married to Rhaegar under the direction of Tywin. That wouldn't set well with most people especially since it seems the Martells were allies with the Targs.

Tyrion wanted to ally with who? So after the Lannisters allied with the Tyrells Tyrion wanted to also ally with the Martells who are enemies of both these families.

She has to be THE most overrated character in the series. Plus that season finale ending didn't do any favors in terms of me liking her more.
