I’m surprised at all the negativity in this thread. If you’re a fan of this grrm universe, I don’t see how you can NOT be excited about this.
Maybe the stupidity of last season or how bad Season 5 was save for Hardhome and anything involving Cersei? There’s something to be said for going out on a high note. Mystery is often more satisfying and intriguing than the answers, and it seems like they’re trying to take out all that from the past.
I’ll let Mark Hamill’s Joker to elaborate on why this could be bad: LINK

I'm not aware of any non-GoT smoke monsters. Is this the elusive admin alter?

What you said.
Martin’s writing made the show great - no one on that shows staff has anything like his talent. That’s why the last few seasons have been so derivative, so dull. The show went to pot when they ran out of his material.
Are they creating this series because they have a great story to tell? Or because they want a branded revenue stream to replace GOT?

I love the revisionist history that season 5 somehow wasn’t based on book material.
I don’t think any of the seasons are remotely ‘bad’ television, but season 5 was the worst because it was based on the two worst books in the series. The best episode of that season was the biggest diversion from the source material.

I both agree and disagree with you. Yes it doesn't help that it is based on Martin's weakest material, but it seems every change they made (with the big exception of Hardhome) was the wrong one. I still think the single worst moment in the show's history was Barristan being killed by a bunch of teenagers defending fricking Grey Worm. In the very least he should have died protecting Dany. This is Screenwriting 101 amateur bullshite. There's no way Barristan goes down like this in the books if that fat turd will ever release it.

The Long Night.
Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know of fear?
Fear is for the winter, my little lord, when the snows fall a hundred feetdeep and the ice wind comes howling out of the north. Fear is for the long night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and little children are born and live and die all in darkness while the direwolves grow gaunt and hungry, and the white walkers move through the woods

Ah. Never watched it. I actually thought we had a real life GoT pre-show book fan.

Would it have killed them to do Dunk And Egg instead? Or is that one of the other 4 pilots?
I ask because going back to the dung ages before the Andals ever crossed over to Westeros seems a bit too divorced from the setting.
We going to get snarks and grumkins in this one?

Maybe not the worst idea but certainly one with the smallest payoff if we already know everything important that happened.
About the only thing left undiscovered was what Rhaegar had planned should he have survived the battle with Robert.
