quote:This is a great breakdown and all these things are true. With that said, there have been a lot of great coaches for him to compete with.
He took a team of kids that could barely skate and built a championship caliber infrastructure, got them new equipment, recruited a big time talent in Adam Banks, by the second movie the team was an international force to be reckoned with. He also built forechecking schemes that played to the team's strengths, the flying V is the best example of that.
Gene Hackman is #1 for his dual-sport work in Hoosiers and The Replacements. I'd rank Gordon Bombay somewhere between 5 and 10.

Good call on Gene Hackman's body of work.
The Flying V is a terrible offensive system, as its obvious only the player on the tp of the V can carry the puck across the blueline. But he was a terrific motivator and a good teacher. Those kids' development was staggering. Bombay was also quite adaptable, and he was a good player's coach, deferring credit to his players. He trusted them, and they rewarded him.
Hmm... poor tactics, good motivations, player's coach.... Bombay is the hockey equivalent of Les Miles.

Although Coach Bombay was a badass, he definitely wasn't the best. The Flying V was a gimmick.
Here are my top 3:
1. Irv Blitzer (John Candy)
- You have to be a badass in order to get 4 Jamaicans to qualify for the Olympics in bobsledding. Also, I attribute a lot of that respect they got in the end to Irv Blitzer's amazing tutelage. Because of him, a small island in the Caribbean earned the respect of the Swiss bobsledding team.
2. Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell)
- Kicked arse and beat the Russians. Enough said. Also, Kurt Russell is Snake Plissken, so he has that going for him too.
3. Jimmy McGinty, Coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman)
- Gene Hackman gets the 3rd place spot mainly for his work in The Replacements. Only a truly badass coach can turn that moron Keanu Reeves into an awesome quarterback who knew sign language. Oh, and he was a good coach in Hoosiers too.

And the refs during their games must have forgotton the rules, since the Flying V would result in an interference penalty every time. Maybe Bombay worked his magic there, though.

It's only illegal if it gets called. The flying V and the Statue of Liberty play may be hokie and flawed in design, but you can't argue with results.
Anybody who can win an ice hockey championship with two black kids on the team is automatically the goat.

Difference is that Bombay had no quirky disposition. He was well-dressed and well-spoken.
Bombay did have that unpredictability thing going. Subbing taking out Goldberg for the cold female goaltender in Julie Gaffney to face Gunner Stahl on the final shot is a crazier affront to conventional wisdom than any of Miles' 4th down calls.
